How to enter DOS environment when booting from USB stick?

Hi all

am trying to update the BIOS on my GAH61MA-D3V mo'board (currently bios ver F3) to recognise a graphics card (MSI GTX1060). When I installed the card, the computer just wouldn't boot past the BIOS screen. So I thought I should update the BIOS to see if that helped.

I followed instructions about creating a bootable USB stick using Rufus (for which I had to download a Win 7 Home Premium ISO from Archive).

I created the bootable USB stick and copied across the update BIOS files onto the stick. I restarted the computer and pressed F12 to enter boot menu, and then selected 'USB', and was hoping that would offer me a DOS prompt so I could then run the EFIFLASH program off the USB.

However it just starts at the 'Installing Windows 7" screen, which I then cancel out of. It doesn't offer me the DOS environment.

Could someone please let me know how to boot off the USB stick so I can enter the DOS environment and then run EFIFLASH off the USB?

thank you all

At the install screen press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt. That's Option One in this tutorial:

Hi Bree
Thank you for the welcome :)

And for the Shift F10 tip! I'd never seen that mentioned anywhere.

I'll try that. Will doing that let me execute DOS files that are on my bootable USB? I guess the drive letter for the USB stick would be as I see it in Windows?

Hi,
Apologies, I meant that I currently have F3 bios, but would like to upgrade to F6 in the hope that my graphics card will work.
Do you think it would be okay to update F3 directly to F6, without doing F4 and F5?

I managed to do the Shift F10 to get to the DOS prompt.

But when I tried to run the EFIFLASH file, it said that this version of Efiflash is not compatible with the version of Windows I'm running, and to check whether I need the 32 bit or 64 bit version of this program.

I'm running the 64 bit version of Windows Home Premium (according to System Information), with SP1.

I created the bootable USB stick using an ISO file I downloaded from Archive: 'Win7 HomePrem SP1 English x64', which was the closest match I could see. I thought it strange that I just couldn't use my already-installed Win7 to create an ISO file for Rufus?

Should I try a different ISO from Archive?
thank you again

Did a search and found this on Toms Hardware forum in relation to updating my BIOS:

You have to boot from a bootable flash drive (into DOS) with the update on it.

You cant use DOS in windows to flash it

Run rufus select freedos. And click on start. Then copy those files to it. Then boot from the flash drive

That seemed to work for me :)

Thanks again to everyone for their input. Waaaaay better than any support I received from the motherboard company :)

I'm so thankful that forums like these exist.
