I would uninstall all ATI drivers and software, then download the newest pack from ati reboot and install the new ones.

Not to try and revive a "dead" thread... but my other computer has the same issue... except I can't even get Windows 7 to load.

Setup:

GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard

SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported

CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TR3X6G1333C9

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter With Dual-Band WMP600N Network adapter - PCI

To install Windows 7, I had to do a clean install and remove the ATI vid card and replaced with NVIDIA 8800 GTX Ultra I had laying around.

I tried to re-install the card after Windows 7 was installed and I ran into the same problem:

The Windows 7 logo appears on the screen and starts to load windows... a second later the screen goes black and the monitor goes into "No input mode" and nothing else happens. I hard reset and it keeps happening over and over.

I think Dave76 may have mentioned it having to do with the rig having 4 gigs of RAM and 2 gigs on a video card on a 32bit system.

However, my other computer also has 4 gigs of RAM and the SAME vid card (just the X2 version that is stated as being supported on Microsofts webpage) and it runs just fine on a 32bit install.

I'm actually starting to think that I may have a DOA card. When I first installed the drivers for this card on XP 32bit, it stated in the Device Manager that is was "Radeon 4800 series" instead of saying "Radeon 4870". Also, when I replaced the card with the older NVIDIA card the boot up was LIGHTNING fast. It always seemed to hang with the ATI card... I never would have noticed had I not replaced the card with the NVIDIA one to install Windows 7.

Yes, I'm really starting to think it may be defective. Odd, the RAM I bought was supposed to be 3x 2gigs... but one of those was also defective so now I only have 4gig. Strange.

Having the same problem

I'm having the same problem with Windows 7 64bit.. System boots up and runs fine /w motherboard gfx, biostar 790gx, once I install the 4870 in the system, and try to boot, it crashes. I can't even boot in safe mode. Is there a way to not detect hardware changes during boot, and run on generic vga driver?

If your mobo has a on board gfx you MUST disable it in bios before installing the ATI card. Best thing to do is boot into windows with the mobo gfx uninstall all gfx drivers for it reboot go into bios and disable the onboard video shut down the machine and then installed the ATI card and boot up.

disabled the mobo grafix

I'm aware of disabling the built in motherboard graphics card. I boot up in win7, remove the drivers, shut down, enter bios, disable the mobo graphics, save and reboot, and windows 7 never fully loads, blue screen. Also crashes in Safe mode. I think there maybe an issue with Biostar TA790gx /w a Sapphire 4870 and Windows 7. I picked up a evga 260gtx, and installed it on the same system and it runs perfectly.

Hi there,
I have encountered the EXACT same problem with my Sapphire 4870 and my new Windows 7 build.
I get to the loading operating system then the screen goes black and monitor goes to sleep.
I had an old XFX Alpha Dog 8800GT lying around put that in and it starts right up. I am so bummed I love the 4870 and can't seem to get it to work.
The BIOS is set to PCI-E, not onboard graphics, I have tried full clean install etc...NOTHING is working.

Anyone resolve this issue short of buying a different card?

BTW my 4870 worked fine for me for almost a year no problems...The card was working yesterday on my old XP build and Gigabyte board.

Its meant to say that. I have a GigaByte 1GB 4870 and it runs smooooooth. have not had a single problem with it, GigaByte all the way people!!

@ randomk - do I dare ask if you have downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from ati?
