Is Powertoy TweakUI expected for Win 7? I liked it in XP to remove options from the desktop right click menu without having to edit the registry.

It still works under w7. I havent tried all of the options yet (but most), but I know the context menu editing works for removing New items. You'll get a prompt about compatability when running it the first time.

I did try running TweakUi myself, but I only got the message 'Cannot Set Up Windows Power Toys' Perhaps it is because I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Absolutely NOT!

While some tweaks may still have an effect, the cross-references for those tweaks/effects are fundamentally different.

It may be hard ending a love affair with such a long history, but you really need to break up.

Let me set you up on a date with |MG| WinBubble 1.76 Download

There a few other fish in the sea. But, you should treat TweakUI as if she has the clap.

You could use Ultimate Windows Tweaker. It works with 7/Vista 32-bit and 64-bit. I use it.

I haven't found Ultimate Windows Tweaker to be unstable at all. It's a portable app that doesn't even need to be installed.

Another cool little free app that was mentioned in the Free software thread by another poster is Microsoft's new version of SyncToy 2.1 available in both x86 and x64 flavors. Highly recommended for syncing folders or even drives. It's pretty fast too.

The reviewer says, "Cons; unstable".

[/QUOTE]

I'd have to say the reviewer knows his stuff. That program killed a brand new machine - it would never boot up after using the Ultimate Windows Tweaker. Worked out ok though - I bought the machine with Win7 Home Premium pre installed, the only thing I had to replace it with was Ultimate. Yeah, I know, shoulda had a back up .... and would have right after applying the tweaks.

Agreed, that app has crashed several machines I know of. Best avoided.

Hi there
I think what a lot of people would like is the old Multiple Desktop tweak that worked in XP -- any other "replacements" I've seen for W7 just don't have either the simple functionality or the stability of the original.

Look for the Virtual Desktop in this link (Note these are for XP NOT W7 -the link is provided just so people who have never used these can see what I'm talking about).

the sysinternals one seems to work on Windows 7 just fine, you just don't have transparent glass on the other desktops.

Hi there
Unlike Xp one can't customise each desktop individually (Aero / glass doesn't work) and often when you switch desktops you STILL see applications running from another desktop.

On XP you really could get this to work as 4 INDEPENDENT desktops.

I agree its better than nothing but it STILL doesn't work in the way it used to.

Now almost every Linux distribution on this planet that uses a GUI or X server has the virtual multiple desktop feature so I'm surprised that Windows doesn't have this as a matter of course --especially with 64 bit machines, more RAM and faster processors allowing many more concurrent appplications to be run than was the case on the older processors.

Cheers

Using it for about a couple hours (no need for multiple desktops, just testing it) I only noticed 2 problems with it:
No transparency (still had Aero, just looked bland) and wallpaper persists. I did not see any apps appearing when they weren't supposed to.

If you want to encrypt files then use winrar.
right click select add to archive then click on advanced tab.
then click on set password
then click on general tab and select what kind of compression method you need.
then click OK!
Hope this helps
