who wants mail back in win7

i thought i would see how many people would like to see win mail back in the rtm of
windows7

if we get a big enough group maybe we can sway them in to putting it back

i myself would love to have it back

First I must declare a clash of interests - I am a long time Thunderbird user.

I can see problems with there not being a Mail client included OOB with windows 7 but also I can understand why this action has been taken.

A lot of, especially novice, users consider things such a IE and WM as the operating system and I have had more than one occasion where a problem with IE or Outlook Express or Windows Mail was explained as "I've broke Windows". These users are going to have a major problem if the lack of an integrated client is badly handled.

The reason for this ommission, is of course an attempt to head off the monopoly regulators in various markets, who have already stated that they will agressively investigating the release of Windows 7.

I personally would like to see the presence of a mail client is Windows 7 RTM or at least an explanation at the first boot after install providing links to the Live suite, whether this needs to go to the lengths of " other Mail clients are available" would depend on MS and the regulators.

It should be an option for those of us in Countries that have decided NOT to sue Microsoft about every darned thing just because it's there and makes a wonderful cash cow. Talk about emasculation! I wonder if the EEC ever asked consumers what they want?

I suppose in a way they did with the "N" versions of vista - and I can't remember that being a major seller .

Certain things being available in the modern OS are now expected and I can see It causing a lot of negative press if MS decide to go the "not included" route

I don't like Windows Live Mail because, if you are like me and have several different email addresses, it insists on setting up a set of folders for each one and shuttling up and down becomes quite a chore.

Windows Mail is sitting there in Program Files, albeit paralyzed and impotent. They should make it an option to choose if you want it or not when you first set up the system.

I have Outlook on the XP side, Win Live Mail on Win 7 side, i like the WLM because it seperates my 3 accounts, Hotmail, Main, and Sub (wife) they all work with no prob's. I hadn't heard they were changing this in the RTM.

Presently 7 is still in beta form. As I remember correctly WM was out of commission in Vista when that was in beta there particularly the RC1 release. If you look closely you can still see the WM folder and files in the Program Files directory in 7 too.



Until 7 is finalized or the next beta release is seen you can use T-Bird or Live Mail.

Thunderbird for life. If omitting mail makes room for more important features I'm all for it. I'd just uninstall any mail client anyways.

I decided to give Thunderbird a try and i like it a lot, so have also installed it on my XP partition.

No go so far with the 7000 build. Looking at the date of the thread I would say that was an earlier stage that saw that work not the general release just seen.



That's a simple task of going into the menu bar>tools>folder options>view tab and unchecking a few hide options as well as selecting the shows all protected sys files. That was used in XP and Vista as well for things like setting up a dual boot.

See post #19 it's a little more complicated than that.

I have WM working for the most part on build 7000. Just can't get it to be the default for .eml files. It will not open an email on my desktop. I have to drag it into the inbox first.

It works fine here too. I did have the "default mail handler" issue a while back and it cleared up once WM had a competing mail handler to contend with.
