The most likely scenario is that Microsoft will release about the same editions that shipped at the release of Windows Vista. Screenshots of current Windows 7 builds display the version that Microsoft is shipping to its partners as Windows 7 Ultimate which could be a hint that we will see a Windows 7 Ultimate edition. If Microsoft stays true to that strategy they will most likely release editions like Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Business as well.

In the DVD for Windows 7 there is are license.txt agreements for Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Enterprise, Business, and Ultimate.
Whether the final releases will be in those formats is unknown at this time.

It is my opinion that there will be about 3 different versions. Something to the effect of:

Home Premium
Enterprise
Ultimate

I dislike all of these editions. I use Home Premium and it seems there is no complete difference between Business and Ultimate. They should just stuck with 2, like XP... or maybe even one. One Windows 7 and one Windows 7 server.

Agreed. The multiple additions with few differences between them except price, is bs. Just another attempt to scam money from people by MS. I think the multiple editions confirms that MS will indeed charge full over priced prices for the Windows 7 editions.

Right now, they are trying to hype up Vista and woo people to it.....only to release a 'fixed' Vista (Windows 7) with in the next year. What a slap in the face to consumers! So far, Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been. It should be an Upgrade really from Vista and at least not full price for those who already bought Vista.

Vista should be discontinued and Windows 7 should be offered to all who purchased Vista. PERIOD

My guess is that there will be an upgrade version for Vista users. Not sure about XP or earlier. If your comp won't run Vista, it probably won't run 7 very well either.

Well if you look at past trends, there has always been an "upgrade" edition of everything for a reduced price. You could have started with say, Win 98 and bought upgrade disks thru the OS's to XP, or Vista if you would've upgraded the hardware. I definately see a Windows 7 upgrade disk on the shelves when it comes out. Also, Vista isn't terrible or anything. It's just...ahead of it's time in a sense. People just don't like the fact that the computer they bought back in 96 can't run everything. And they believe everything they see on TV (Mac commercials). Also, the different flavors are supposed to be for different budgets, and the "basic" editions will run smoother on your economic machines, and you wouldn't really care for "media center" or "home edition" in a business environment just the same as you don't need domain joining capabilities at home unless you feel the need to run a server at your house, in wich case you probably would be smart enough to know the differences. XP had more than 2 flavors also. You had XP Home, 2 versions of XP Media Center edition, XP Professional, and XP 64 bit edition (yes, it was separate). Win2k had different versions, aswell as Win2k3, WinNT, 98, and I think ME did too, however I never touched it. It's to be expected that Win 7 is to be better than Vista, because it's newer. Also, just because it came out so quick doesn't mean it's because Vista stunk, XP was an enigma, a failed business model. Remember back in the day that Microsoft was shooting OS's out like a gumball machine, XP just managed to go on for 8 years because, at its birth it was supposed to be the end. You were orignially to pay an anual subscription fee for activation and updates like SonicWall or Norton or McAfee. They just gave up on that and decided to see how far they could go, then Longhorn came into business and evolved to Vista. And to add to that, did anyone pre-beta Vista? Totally different system. It's still possible for Win 7 to flop, remember we gotta year to go and we are several builds behind. We boot fast because we have stripped down versions, wait until the water wieght fills in.

I hope not. I want people to see how good it actually is. People just "hate" Vista because of what they've heard, but for goodness sake, there is nothing wrong with it. If you have it on a good enough PC it'll be a very nice experience, and a big change from XP.

I think there should be:
Windows 7 Home
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 7 Enterprise - replacing business and enterprise
Windows 7 Academic - for schools etc.

I think there are two version of Windows 7: Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Server.
