I'm a new Windows 7 user, having skipped Vista. This OS was just officially released last month and already talking Windows 8. Are they crazy? They had better hope that a lot of XP users will convert in these first few months of Win 7. I love it, having been a XP Pro user since 2002. I skipped Vista, all of my friends that had it despised it, and some downgraded to XP Pro. This is a great OS, and the deals are out there now for laptops. And they are loaded to the gills. But with this economy, they better wholeheartly support Windows 7, so that it will leave the legacy that XP did. There are so many XP users out there, although with these good deals, their numbers will dwindle fast. Let's enjoy what we have for the time being and not rush forward so fast.

The standard development cycle for a Windows OS is about four years from Start to official release.

It is normal for the replacement OS to be in the early design stages before the current OS is released.

It was certainly the case with XP, Vista, and Windows 7 Where each had a design team in place, and working, on the release date of it's predecessor

Here is something to consider though.

3 years from now redesign of the OS will most likely need to be done to support the current devices of that time. Look at what the last couple of years has done for touch based input and so many other things. To keep up with current technology they may be planning a redesign rather than just patching 7 with the changes. It is much cleaner and prevents a lot of possible problems with things not working as intended. Probably the best option if you ask me.

If they intend to charge us 300 every 3 years for a new OS they must plan on going out of business soon because no one can justify spending that kind of cash on an OS. I am having a hard time even justifying the current release and it's cost let alone another one in 3 years.

I guess I feel like they are starting to just shove new software out the door and charge charge charge for it.

If you look at how the world buys it's windows operating systems the 3 year cycle does make some sense - Most businesses will use a 3-4 year depreciation cycle and a lot of home users replace their PC on a 3/4 year cycle.

Most people do not upgrade their OS they replace the PC and OS - so the cost of the OS is not the $300 but a much lower cost that is buried in the hardware cost. We as enthusiasts / Professionals are a small (but important :p ), group who's OS habits do not follow the norm.

I can see Windows 8 being a major release, if Microsoft follow their recent policy.

We had XP which was an evolutionary build on Windows 2000, ( Windows 5.0 to 5.1), then the revolutionary Vista followed by the evolutionary Windows 7 (Windows 6.0 - 6.1).

Looking forward to see what will be available to us in the future but I expect to be supporting XP, Vista And Windows 7 for some years yet

No :p

Basically the Windows 7 design team were in place and working on the release date of it's predecessor, Vista. The same for the Vista Team when XP was released, (although this would have been the Longhorn team ;)).

MS mentioned it usual 3-5 years timeframe so either 2012 or later depend on MS team to decide when it release - need lots of work also it wont be 32bits OS anymore as it last one with W7 so W8 will be using 64and 128bits OS and think it will be complete different icon,etc.. from Vista/W7 so it up to 3-5 years for Windows 8 to be release, MS want to take it time to build up before begin to development Windows 9 due by between 2015 or 2016 or later.

So at the moment Windows 7 look nicely -- use it before Windows 8 release as AMD/Intel are development new 128bits CPU.. keep watch for latest news,etc..

Hi there
let's hope WZOR doesn't start leaking early builds - I've just about got W7 running how I want it.:D

While many people can't justify spending $300 dollars for a new OS every 3 years; on the flip side many people are willing to do so. Regardless, MS doesn't FORCE you to buy the new OS once released. So if by 2012 you are perfectly fine with running Win 7 on your machine, then by all means don't upgrade. But, if you feel the need to upgrade, well hey, good for you. I don't see the point of trying to justify spending $300 every 3 years unless between now and 2012, MS makes an official statement saying that every Windows user HAS to upgrade to Windows 8.

hahahahahahaha sorry to make an off topic again but in order to know 2012 was suppost to happen, around may 2009, we were suppost to see some type of a "black dot" on the sun that was suppost to be the revealing "planet x" or reffered to as "nibiru" but it didnt show up...too scared of mother earth? So i am guessing we all going to live through 2012.
If so, ima buy a plane ticket, go to mexico and go to where the mayans are at and LAUGH OUT LOUD at their faces and say how much they really fail on predictions. then go back to america, find nostrodamus and say...."it didnt happen...HA HA...HA.HA" lol

then i go out to buy a new laptop with windows 8 in it and live my life as a 22 year old person. :D

It has been clearly said by the MAYANS THEMSELVES that they don't believe in this prediction....

It was started by people who followed the MAYAN calendar but have no affiliation with them

ima still go watch the movie just for entertainment. But we all know it yet till 2011. NASA still claims they see another solar planet heading towards our solar system. But i wont choose to believe it. So much for 2000 for computer crashing and that. LOL

to get back on topic:
Most home users just switch whne they buy a new PC. In caseof Vista-->W7 there will be many people who will switch out of the ordinary cycle since W7 uses less resources. typically every OS uses more resources (since it can do more) and a hardware upgrade often is recommended.

to the cost: the example here with W7 ultimate is bogus. first, anyone would get an upgrade, so it wouldn't be that much. Second, W7 ultimate is way too much. for home users even with home network the home=professional is fine. Family pack is $ 150 for 3 PCs.

I have W7 Pro-64bit on my desktop and might get another license (I'm a student, so it is only $ 43 :-) for my wife's laptop or a potential second desktop/media center. I plan on skipping W8 unless it really has some great advantages over W7. It would be too much hassle and cost to maintain so many different OS at home. If we ever need a new laptop, it will have whatever it has at that time since you can't buy one without OS. But any desktop is manually built by me and I may carry over my W7 license for a long time.

The real good thing about W8 is that it is supposed to finally kill 32-bit. It is costing society so much to have the inferior 32-bit and 64-bit around. The only disadvantage of 64-bit is that some manufacturers still live int he 32-bit world and they need to be forced to adapt or die. FYI: It is 2009... and 64-bit has been around since XP.

Edit: I hope they get rid of the many versions. Have a home version (similar to home professional now) and a professional with everything in it. Like in XP days. Assuming only 64-bit, that makes 2 OS to chose from and to maintain. what they are doing now is just insane.
