Hi,

I have installed W7 on several computers, both laptops and a desktop, and I am having real trouble with extremely slow copying, transferring and deleting files and directories. What used to take minutes in XP, now takes hours, particularly the "preparing to copy" phase.

I know this was a bug in early Vista releases, but would have thought it was fixed now. Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks.

J

Thanks for you response, Ken.

Mostly the problem occurs when copying from one drive to another, either within one computer or to an external HDD. Even when copying from one location to another on the same drive. Moving on the same drive is no problem , i.e. instant.

This happens on several computers: a Dell E6500, a Dell D820, a self-built desktop, and a few others, all run Windows 7 Ultimate, and most have 4GB RAM.

Appreciate your input.

Are you running any antivirus or other security software? What software have you already installed? "Moving on the same drive is no problem , i.e. instant." Moving on the same drive is not conclusive, a move operation just edits the MFT with the new location, nothing is really moved.

Thanks, Logicearth

I am only running AVG 9.0, which I was also running prior to upgrading to W7. It seems to me the problem is related to Windows analyzing the data before moving it, which it does at a rate of only a few MB a second.

Uninstall AVG for now. There have been a lot of major problems being reported with Windows 7 and AVG.

Did anyone find a solution for slow copy?

I have the same problem, copying from CD to local drive, to network drive, to USB thumb drive.

Not sure if I have the same problem between the others.

A lot of threads on this or other sites pointed to a MS patch for similar problem for NVIDIA EHCI.

Anyone have comments about EHCI for an Intel Chip set?

Did you try going into device manager right clicking on the drive then properties then policies and change setting to performance?
