You can love and hate them all you want. :) The fact is most of their applications are fairly decent. MSE is one of the best things I've seen from then yet.

Oh and their applications being bloated, well thats an opinion. :)

The last 2 years, I've really liked Norton AV products (NAV and NIS). It installs in less than 2 minutes which is a far cry from the awful 20-30 minute install/update process of the 2006 & 2007 versions of NIS. Anytime I see someone knock Norton's AV products I know it's because they are stuck in the past when it was a dog. Check out a non-partisan review of NIS to see that it's very well regarded now.

What I don't like about Norton is how hard it is to remove. The joke (that carries some partial truth) is that Norton's a virus in and of itself.

Granted, the newer versions have been faster, chewing up less resources and all...but they're still a witch to remove.

I have MSE, and I've not found a single reason to dislike it (yet), and plenty of reasons to love it. And it's perfectly compatible with Windows 7 - as it SHOULD be (seeing as it's made by MS and all).

It takes 3 programs to uninstall Norton,. First RevoUinstaller,. which starts Norton's Uninstaller,. then Revo goes on to remote leftover files and registry entries, then you need to run the Norton Removal Tool to finally get rid if it.

I know of no other company that proves a tool to remove their own program.

Can't one of their developers write a correct uninstall routine.

I can't put any trust into a program like this,. let alone the bloatware and speed hit.

I've used Avast also and find it decent, if not a bit quirky in it's interface design.

Have you tried the Avast 5 Beta? I don't find it quirky at all. You must be talking about 4.8. 5 Beta interface is fantastic compared to the old Avast. It actually is one of my favorite GUI's out there currently.

I think you got it all mixed up.
Norton Removal Tool should uninstall it completely.
You don't have to use anything else first.

Even then, you only need to use that 'one' remover when the uninstall doesn't work properly. With NIS 2010 it uninstalled perfectly fine for me. Just don't uninstall with firefox open, doesn't remove the addons properly. :|

So the Norton removal tool takes it out of Programs and Features also.
