there's nothing old or unique about my laptop. except for the memory and the HDD, everything in it came that way from the factory about 6 months ago

Ubuntu still refuses to acknowledge my wifi on my *BRAND NEW* laptop, and my Wireless-N network adapter on my desktop.
Fedora also refuses the Adapter, though it works on my laptop.

So no, there is NOT A SINGLE OS that will do that perfectly, it is all about the drivers that the manufaturers have to make for Windows. And the major problem with Linux is that the hardware that does not already work does not have a driver. Companies RARELY make drivers for Linux becuase there is no money in it. All the drivers for Linux have been reverse compiled from already made drivers.

Actually the biggest problem with hardware compatibility with any OS is in the manufacturerwho refuse to release source code for drivers to the open market and in microsoft's refusal to release it's source code to manufacturers. If nobody knows exactly how something works, it's a lot more difficult to figure out how to get it to connect.

Hi there

1) Food Pill etc -- ever heard of "Quorn" - revolting stuff meant to taste like "Meat" but can be grown (?) or manufactured from Biomass.

2) self parking car -- a number of vehicles have decent "sensors" on them when parking - nearly there.

A prototype electric car is going to have fully 360 deg steerable wheels which should make parking easier - although manoeuvrability would be a bit like a Supermarket Trolley -- to mathematics puzzle solvers -- try and work out the equations of motion of a Supermarket trolley -- not easy as all 4 wheels have independent motion.

Keep you busy over thae Xmas Holiday period.

VideoPhones HAVE caught up, read posts before you post your own opinion. I am deaf/hardofhearing and I have a VideoPhone that is superior. You connect Ethernet into the VideoPhone and connect A/V into your big screen TV and talk face to face with other VideoPhone owners. Almost 99% of deaf world HAS a VideoPhone. So it HAS caught up to recognition.

Yes but the original context regarding the Videophone was about a wider and more commonplace usage.

ie "Every phone is a videophone", not niche markets.

Videophone: first thing in morning, before shave, in bath, pretending to be at work etc. etc.
Sometimes it's a good idea not to be seen.
And frankly, even a "normal" phone is too intrusive for my taste -people seem to think that just because you're there they can break into your life.

There is alot of truth to that. My girlfriend is Latin American. When she looks me in the eye, I get plenty scared.
