Power Point VIEWER not working in W7 x64

Hi,

I am new to W7 and I am using the x64 version. I am having the problem that Power Point Viewer doesn't work. I don't want to buy or install Microsoft Office 2010 only for the Power Point Viewer because I really don't like it, don't use it and it takes huge space in my hard disk. Same about Open Office. I have been using the small application of Microsoft to run the power points. Just the viewer.

Is anyone with x64 running the power point viewer? Does anyone know of a small sized alternative?

Thank you.

Hi kmint,

I'm running Windows 7 x64 and just installed PowerPoint Viewer 2007 from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...40-14E1-467D-8DCA-19D2A8FD7485&displaylang=en

It's installed and running perfectly fine. Can you please be more specific about what doesn't work?

- Did you install from the same .exe you had leftover from an earlier version of Windows, or did you download a new .exe?
- Are you getting any errors when you try to install the software?
- Can you install and open the program itself, just not any actual presentations?

I'd troubleshoot PPV first before trying to use a third-party viewer; PPV is lightweight and barebones, perfect for what you want to do. If you answer the above questions (whichever ones apply) I'll be able to help you better.

Cheers,

Walker

Hey, finally a reply. Thank you very much.

Well it's not a big deal. I finally installed the PP that comes withing Office 2010 Beta. The only problem is that it takes lots of MB. Nothing relevant as I have 250 GB, just a little perfectionism in keeping my system as light as possible by using the lightest software and only the very necessary. I learnt that in this way my Windows always runs smooth and fast (along with regular cleaning and defrag maintenance).

Anyway, to the point. Answering your questions.

1- I got Windows 7 one month ago. I then installed PPV 2007 from my programs folder (let's say the copy that I keep always with me). It installs well but when you open a PP file nothing happens. As if it wasn't installed.

So I reinstalled it again overwriting it. No changes. Then I uninstalled completely with Revo Uninstaller (deep registry cleaning and total uninstall) and reinstalled it again. No changes. Then I downloaded it from the MS web, the same link you give me. No changes. And I lost track of what else I did or try.

So, to summarize. It installs well but it won't open the PP files. When installing the one that comes within Office 2010 (the full program), everything works fine.

Thanks a lot.

EDIT: By the way... I was thinking that, actually, the Office version is a free Beta for testing, and that the license expires in a few months. So, yes, I would definetely like to fix this problem because I definetely won't buy Office only for this purpose (I can't even afford it, lol).

Have you tried right-clicking the file, selecting "Open with..." and choosing PowerPoint Viewer from the list? I honestly can't think of any other reason why PPV wouldn't be working.

This thread on Microsoft Answers suggests performing a clean boot. It might be worth a try... let us know if it works for you!

Thanks for your help. Yes I tried from the context menu but doesn't work. I will try with that link you suggest. Looks complicated though the clean boot thing.

Thanks a lot again.

Just to add that I found the problem. I was installing the English version and didn't run. Then I downloaded the one in my language version and it worked. I mean my language but my Windows 7 language too of course.

Try that just in case.

Thanks for returning to update the thread, kmint! Pedrosoft, if you're still following can you comment on whether changing the download language helps you install a working version of PPV?

Powerpoint viewer solution

I couldn't get my powerpoints to play until I right clicked on the one I wanted to view and clicked rename. The only thing I changed was the pps. I changed it to ppt and now I can watch it. I don't know if this helps anyone but it helped me.

Possible Solution

I’m having a problem opening files using ‘Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007’. Every time I try to open a file with it, it tries to open the file with ‘2007 Microsoft Office component’. I’ve right clicked on the file and tried the ‘open with’ option, and found the viewer and clicked on it. Even after I do this, it still tries to use ‘2007 Microsoft Office component’. Even using the properties window and changing the ‘Opens with:’ option, it still uses ‘2007 Microsoft Office component’ to open the file. It’s as if the two programs are getting confused with each other.
The only option I’ve found is to open ‘Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007’ directly. After you do this a window will pop open allowing you to find a file and open it. While this does allow you to use the viewer, it is still not functioning as intended.
Anybody have any other answers?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Do you just have Powerpoint Viewer installed or do you have Microsoft Office 2007 (which includes Powerpoint)installed as well?
