Really? I never noticed a real difference when doing that, compared to when I just don't touch those settings. :s

Those settings are for disabling not for enabling. Windows is already aware of your hardware and does not need to be told. So just leave it alone.

So it will go like this:
Microsoft is assuming that Multi-core is enabled from Bios
Number of processors. Limits the number of processors used on a multiprocessor system. If the check box is selected, the system boots using only the number of processors in the drop-down list.

This option is only for enabling or disabling different core through Windows interface. I hope I am totally right.

If you select Processor 2, then your both cores will be disabled. How will Windows start?

According to Microsoft support:
This switch sets the number of processors that Windows will run at startup. With this switch, you can force a multiprocessor system to use only the quantity of processors (number) that you specify. This switch can help you troubleshoot performance problems and defective CPUs.

If you have 2 processors/cores selecting 2 does nothing.

it means if you have a Quad-Core processor, if you select 3, then 1 core will be disabled and 3will work. If you select 2, then 2 will be disabled and 2will work. It goes in ascending right :S?

No that's not right. If you are running Windows on Core2Duo processor, windows will use both the cores by default. So you need not change it. Also, changing the number of cores in msconfig simply means that it will affect the boot process. if you select 1 core, your computer will use 1 core while booting.

For more logical explanation, simply open task manager(Processes Tab) and you can see that windows is using both the cores. ;)

Hope this helps,
Dinesh.
