Hello,

I was using winrar on win 7 but now I removed it and I can still access zipped Folder via "windows explorer" which is cool is it enough ? or do I need to reinstall winrar? Because now I can access the files without winrar so no need to unzip them anymore.

Windows Explorer has native support for .zips

These days I prefer 7zip - it opens (and creates) all kinds of archives, there is a 64-bit version, and it's free. Windows on the other hand will open zip and cab files, but not rar, gz, bz2, etc.

Hello The Iceman,

If you cannot open a ZIP file, then the ZIP download option in the tutorial below will restore the default ZIP associations back in Windows 7 so that you should be able to afterwards.

I am the same way...I have no clue why folks elect for WinRAR

7zip is free (like you said), very minimalistic, and not bloated

Why not use 7zip...free, does everything that winrar does and more...

I use 7Zip. I like it, although its interface isn't very Windows-ish (IMHO).

As far as I know, it can't create RAR archives, although it can expand them. Its supported formats are 7z, zip, and tar. (Tar is for Tape ARchive, popular on Unix systems.)
