I have a desktop PC running Win7 and a laptop also running Win7. When I attempt to copy a file from the desktop to the laptop I copy file and then direct it to the temp file on the laptop. I receive "the \\Toshiba2\C:\folder does not exist. The file might have been moved or deleted. Do you want to create it" I have both pc's on a homegroup and when I look at the laptop it shows a temp file on C: and if I say yes to create it (from the message I receive) nothing happens, cannot find created item.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The computers are connected thru a router by cable.

Hi robert and welcome

whats the path of where you want to copy them to? the error is saying to c:\folder. Is that the temp folder you want to copy it to?

What do you mean by this? Have you tried to just open two Explorer windows and drag-&-drop your file?

To Zigzag3143.
Don't know why the "temp" was left off the message I got, but I was trying to copy to C:\temp when I attempted to copy.

To WalkerA:
Not sure how to do what you suggest. I'm trying to copy the file from one PC to another PC; how could I "drag" and drop in that case?

I believe it shuld be the permission issue since C being the windows/root drive.

If you have any other partition on the destination machine, try to copy to there. Or, you can create a temp folder in the dest machine and then transfer.

If destination PC is on your regular network (not Homegroup), you should be able to pull up two adjacent Explorer windows - origin folder in one, destination folder in the other - and drag-and-drop the file. By no means is that the only way - Cato's suggestion is a great solution - to me it's just the most visually clear process. But it may indeed be a permissions issue too

Is the temp file on the laptop machine actually shared? by using an explicit path like you show, you will not be able to make the copy. You would have to use this: \\Toshiba2\C$\temp\

If it is shared you just need to use \\Toshiba2\temp\

Why not just use the folders that are made to share with? Like one of the many Library folders or any of the Public folders. Of course you would need to set up either Homegroups or Workgroups before hand.

To all that replied to my plea:
zigzag123,WalkerA,CATO,DRE@MS,mvnsnd and Chev65 I thank you much. It seems that part of the problem is that I evidently don't have "permissions" on my laptop for C: drive and unfortunately I don't know how to do it.
As you can probably tell, I'm not too comfortable 7 yet and while with XP it seemed much easier 7 just has me confused. What with Homegroups, etc. as Elvis would say, I'm all shook up. I tried the C$ bit and was told I don't have permission. With CATO's suggestion, I was never able to just extract the exe. file from Copy_move zip file. And on and on. So thanks for now and I'll keep trying.

There is actually no .exe file to extract. Here's quotes from Brinks tutorial on how to extract the .reg file.

After downloading:
2. Click on Save and save the ZIP file to the Desktop (C:\Users\(user name)\Desktop).
3. Right click on the Add_CopyMove.zip file (on desktop) and click on Open.
4. Extract the Add_CopyMove.reg file to the Desktop (C:\Users\(user name)\Desktop).
5. Right click on the Add_CopyMove.reg file (on desktop) and click on Merge.
6. Click on Yes.
The downloaded ZIP and REG files can now be deleted from your desktop.

To Bill:
Many many thanks for the info. on the link to sharing and permissions and home group create. My only problem was when I went to properties on the program I wanted to share, it showed "everyone" as it should, but the next step was to click on the "share tab" next to the security tab and there wasn't one. Not sure how to proceed from there?

I would like to try your solution using the tutorial again. My question is where or what is the "context menu". After I tried it the first time, could not find the command anywhere to copy and/or move. Sorry I'm so dense on this

To:acurasd.
Thanks for the offer, but it seems that I have finally "got it" and I'm sorry for so many posts it took for me to do so. I am using CATO's suggestion and so far it is working. The only thing left is that I can copy files ok, but not a program. Guess that is one thing that I'll just have to pass on.
Again thanks to all those that replied, and you may close the post.
