MS Security Essentials Vs. AVG 9.0

Though it is lacking in preference settings it does a very good job as is. I Personally I don't do a lot of adjustments with my Ainti-Virus' anyway so this is perfect for me.

And the the biggest plus, to me, is the lightness of the program. It simply doesn't slow Windows down. That includes startup or shutdown. A big plus. :D

Former Norton & Kaspersky user.

Is anyone using both AVG 9.0 paid version and MS Security Essentials?

Has anyone dropped AVG paid version for MS Security Essentials?

Is MS Security Essential worth a try?

Is it better than AVG?

Thanks.

I have used the paid version of AVG for years, recently 9.0, and have loved it, especially the feature where is searches websites before you load them. My two year subscription was ending so I switched to MSSE and so far so good. I figured that it was worth a try as with all that MS has gone through in the last few years I think they would not put a product out that did not pass high marks, so I was willing to take a chance. My personal opinion is that this Vista nightmare of MS's humbled them in a very good way. That being said, if money was not an issue I would stick with the paid AVG in my case.

There's a firefox add on called Web of Trust which is similar to AVG's link checker, you might wanna check it out if you haven't already.

For most of my "computing life" I've used either AVG or AntiVir. For the past 6-7 years mind you, I've stuck with AntiVir.

I like AVG because I found it extremely lite on the system. I disliked it because I found the detection rate quite poor.

I just tried MSE last night and do love it. It is so far the only AV program that is making me seriously consider dumping AntiVir.
I do find with MSE it uses more RAM. I noticed last night that on average it was using between 60-70MB's. Currently AntiVir is using around 20MB's, though can reach 50.

Having said that, I didn't noticed any slow down in my system at all.

So if I had to choose between AVG & MSE, I'd go MSE hands down.
MSE vs AntiVir...Although I'm sticking with AntiVir, I'd still seriously consider MSE.

Err, I mean, you should choose whichever you like the most. I've been using the beta versions of MSE since it came out, then used the final version when that was out, now using the ongoing beta version.

Never had any problems, always detected things for me. Never slowed me down either, can't say the same for AVG (last time I used it, was when it was 8.5 though).

At this point I happen to be in agreement. Apparently while exchanging information with one tech support for a software used regularly here "any" antivirus as well as other security programs running in the background can interfere. Once AVG 9.0 was placed on the disabled list guess what caught what some "approved site" believe or not according to Bing with a green check mark trying to place a bug on the system here?

Microsoft Security Essentials which has absolutely no effect on the program involved! I used to see AVG spring to life when disabled to flag bugs. Apparently MS got it right this time with the MSE!

(First 7 now MSE! Way to go MS about time! :D )

Threatfire

Since we are on the subject of AV software, may I suggest that all who have not done so take a look into PC Tools ThreatFire as an adjunct to your present AV software. I have used it for years with no problems and it caught a couple of things, though I do not recall exactly what now, that otherwise went undetected. I recommend it.

Here is a little blurb from their website - "By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is able to stop never- before-seen "zero-day" threats solely by detecting their malicious activity."

This seems to be a more verbose way of saying what most other A/Vs call heuristic detection, which is a common feature in most A/Vs.

I have used AVG in the past but since win7 beta/RC been using MSE, great little program and easy on resources what more could you want.

I spend most of my time in the crashes and debugging dept and there seems plenty of BSODs that involve A/V programs and alot of them are AVG (and McAfee), where as i havent seen a single one that involves MSE so compatibilty is good, but then seein as its MS product it really should be :sarc:

With AVG disabled here something got on the system and was flagged by MSE. But when clicking the clean computer option it wanted to install something that kept running into the "you don't have enough permissions" warning. Finally after several repeat attempts I was able to get the download MSE wanted on to work!

Get this the trojan was placed on the system by a site with the green check mark on it while searching with Bing! That seems to be a problem with the new MS search it would seem since this bug got through since disabling AVG a few days ago! The image here shows just what MSE found when "something" got on!

Technical information on that trojan can be seen at http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc/archive/2008/12/09/fakexpa-journey-of-a-rogue.aspx
