OK I did it NOW! 100% MS Security Essentials Test

I am a Canary also. I was running Norton 2009 and just removed it and went with MSE, Windows Firewall and UAC at default. I had some improvement in boot up and a big improvement when opening Fire Fox. My understanding on the updates is that MSE will only update every 24hrs and the time is not user controlled. It will also check after bootup and if the update is over 24hrs it will do an update. I was also running ThreatFire which monitors for malware type activity but MSE also does this so I disabled ThreatFire. I also run Malwarebytes on demand and I use Secunia Personal Software Inspector Download - Personal (PSI) - Vulnerability Scanning - Secunia.com
which checks for unpatched programs.

By far, the best security system out there is common sense. You know, I have only gotten viruses a few times, namely when I was downloading music illegally and downloading keygens for software. I was in shady sites both times. Since those days, I have never even downloaded a virus.
Loads of common sense plus control of the hand that clicks the links, when the mind is otherwise tempted.
[Never had a virus or malware here ever.]

Defense system is only as good as it's operator. And in Antivirus / Antispyware case, it's best strength is their updates. Recently, My Bitdefender missed a malware hidden in the Flashdrive, where Spybot S&D spoted it by didn't removed it, MBAM helped out. Since no AV out there is perfect & not bound to agree with other AVs, user can't be sure what decision to take whe malware strikes.

So be wise on what you click & where you surf, Good Luck, Good Surfing.

DITTO 7mm. Your statement is straight to the point.
My orginal point for starting the original message was that I wasn't sure if MSE would handle everyday surfing security. It has been well over a month and I feel MSE totally secure. Some may disagree but I enjoy a program that runs in my background that doesn't slow the rest of the world down and still gives you 100% security.
Thank you MSE TEAM!:D

Thanks to the OP for this thread, i was using (and JUST using) Avast Pro 4.8 (legit 1yr--which i think is almost finished;)) without UAC and NO windowz Firewall, i am now running Firewall on with recommended settings, No UAC and MSE (the only thing i done with it is disable schedule scanning). this morning i left it running and let it scan my 2 drives and 5 partitions (didnt see how long it took as i was at work). it found a few things (mostly packed into a vista black edition of course) and another thing it found which baffles me is it claims a video i d/l has a Trojan Downloader?? a video?? but the thing with these virus software programms is you dont really know who to trust, Avast has a good history, but did not pick up the video but MSE did? i know its just 1 file, but all to their own, i think it could mean it may be 'over sensitive', which is not always a bad thing.

also a bit nooby of me...but is there a way to get hold of files that it quarantined or removed? cos if not that is really rather rude of it. LOL, even though it MAY have infected files or so, the end user should still have complete control.

all in all, i did notice a smaller amount of memory is free since the swap, and like others, a slightly quicker boot time.:)

I dont know why but MSE looks kinda crappy to me with its ugly interface and poor of options but i dont know what antivirus to use so im currenty using it.
With ESET i got RAM leaking problems i still havent tested AVG but i have heard that it uses much RAM too and i think avast has low detection rate.

dont look at it then, or increase your pagefile size and worry less about ram usage, or get more ram. i have never had an issue while using Avast, and i do do some extreme surfing every now and again, including d/l A LOT of torrents.

or dont use the internet.:p

but if your ram is leaking, you should really call a plumber to fix its leak.

After doing a lot of reading about MS Security Essentials I have made a decision to test my Win7 HD and have removed all Virus Software and installed MS Security Essentials. IE8 is showing Protected Mode is ON as well as Popup Blocker.
MS Win7 Firewall is up and I have UAC set to the default level.
Defender is gone, MSE shuts that down during install.

So far I have found that I have reduced memory usage about 30 Meg.
My Re-bootup time has dreceased from 63 sec to 54 seconds.

Does anyone else have your system setup this way?
Have I missed anything else?

Will keep you posted on how ell thing perform.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to decrease Boot time ! ;)

How do you access that Boot Time Monitor tool ? I wouldn't mind timing my boot time

Thanks

These apps are pointless - you need one main app - I use MSE. Then you need a software and hardware firewall for broadband - I use Windows Firewall. UAC is set at default. No other apps are necessary and this is my gaming PC. All these extra apps are slowing down your browser and wasting resources. You only need Malwarebytes if your system has been compromised.

For my laptop I use Norton 360 and Defender. That's it. Opera is the browser. UAC at default.

hmm i have always hated Norton, i think the whole mainstream and so much oem sales got to their heads and now they have internal viruses and little worms inside of their brains.

sorry but which "apps" are you referring to? people that use 2 or 3 different anti-virus/malware/spyware crap? i have always just used the one as well, was avast (still is on my other 2 systems) but now my main system is just using MSE like you, but no UAC (i hate UAC ever since vista)

it would be good if they could integrate a security add on into other browsers like they have in IE-8 so us opera/fiery fox uses can benefit from the extra security.

Yes, MSE is much better for my gaming PC's health. As for apps, I mean security apps. You do not need 3 or 4. Pointless. Just 1. UAC is very necessary, otherwise your system is as secure as XP - with UAC you are prompted for system wide actions, so you run as a standard user rather than as an admin and malware will have a field day on an admin account. You also don't need browser extensions.

browser extensions are more than just security fixes...I have extensions that make my browsing easier such as omnibar for firefox so I have one complete bar that does everything...I just type and go

By far, the best security system out there is common sense. You know, I have only gotten viruses a few times, namely when I was downloading music illegally and downloading keygens for software. I was in shady sites both times. Since those days, I have never even downloaded a virus.

Jonathan, you disappoint me. When you go on shady sites and download stuff, why not use a sandbox and run the downloaded stuff first thru an upstream malware checker. Here is a whole selection. Once it's ok, you can still put it on your real system.

I'm so glad everyone is talking and trying MS Security Essentials. All I can say is it works and it will take time for others to trust it. I 'm trying to trust it 100% but at 7mm has mentioned earlier that the user has to watch out where they go. If you go and download copyrighted materials from seedy sites you deserve what you get and don't blame any AV for not working. None of them are 100% fool proof. Those idiots out there are always trying to compensate any antivirus software just to prove they can do it and try to bring down Microsoft.

I still manually scan with Malewarebytes and was using Search and Destroy but I noticed I had some sort of program it was running in the background when I booted and I didn't want that so I deleted it.

Have a great day and weekend all.

Since i've been using MSE (the new beta program) 100% and i stay away from those seedy sites, i never know it's there except when a new update comes in from MS. The last update put me at version 1901 and i think the public version was 1611.
