i'm not trying to drag the issue out, but i thought the issue was the fact the windows was mis-reporting the ram amount... the bsod and finding that the 512mb stick was bad was a secondary issue... am i wrong? if not, then excuse my intrusion.:o

Order yourself a GIG stick to replace the malfunctioned 512MB one

then he'd have 3gb--the board, according to the gigabyte website (GA-8VM800PMD-775-RH - GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Specification) only has a 2gb limit. again, excuse me if i'm not fully understanding just what happened here, but I thought that the problem was the mis-reporting of the ram. (his specs say 2gb + .5gb -- the 512mb stick is bad and with 2gb, windows is still reporting he has 1gb. hope i still know how to read...)

Windows 7 cuts my RAM
Hey guys, I hope some1 can help.
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my PC, and everything is great except for 1 major flaw...
Windows 7 decided I only have 1GB of RAM installed when I actually have 2GB. I know cause I installed it myself. And even CPU-Z still sees it as 2GB. Only Windows 7 doesn't.
I tried changing the RAM from 1 port to the other, and still the same.

* The RAM is by Kingston, if it matters.
* In Windows XP, I was able to use all of the 2GB.

Thanks in advance!

I thought he had 1-1 GB stick of RAM and a .5GB stick...

You are probably right though...

absolutly right!!!
I thought it was the 2GB that was bad...
damn.
so this is not solved yet.

as I mentioned, the 0.5GB is just an add-on that I added for check purposes.

so what is our next step?

hey...
Just wanted to show you guys that windows says that I have 1.5GB installed, and not 2 as you can see in CPU-Z (in 1 slot) or 2.5GB (if you consider the 2 slots)...
I am not crazy (I think).

Based on your .dmp file, I would still replace the memory module... you can always return it if need be... I cant think of any other solution...

Tom I think he got the BSOD when running with only the .5 stick which would mean he needs a replacement for the .5 stick but that isn't the concern here...

To summarize so all of us can help him better...

1) .5 stick of RAM is bad
2) 2GB stick is okay but Windows reports it incorrectly as 1.5GB where as CPU-z reports it as 2GB (which is the concern here)

You are right!
Just 1 small correction, windows reports my 2GB as 1GB not 1.5.

PS The 0.5GB is out anyway... it was in just for a test.

Anyone got any ideas?

Just some toughs:
- your old type of memory (DDR1??) is relatively expensive for the amount you get compared to newer types.
- the rest of your system (board/CPU) is old too, and slow compared to what you get nowadays. Maybe in a year it will die too.

If you can afford $ 200 - $ 250 you could buy a really decent board/CPU/4 GB RAM and replace what you have as opposed to sinking money in the old system. Any dualcore CPU and board with onboard graphic beats you current system. Nothing wrong with having an old system when it fulfills your needs, but when it starts needing repair it is time to think of upgrading. That way you also can be up to date for some years to come. W7 doesn't need much RAM... but when you have more RAM it will use it and be even faster. Obviously we can help with specifics on a system upgrade.

Just my 2ct.

Just my 2ct.

I'd love a new comp, but I'm currently only making enough to live on (sometimes not even). So I can't afford it.
I also don't live in the states, so everything here is more expensive than what you wrote...

So now, I'd like to go back to the matter at hand, if you guys don't mind.

What is the reason Windows 7 reads my 2GB Kingston RAM as 1GB only.
to recap:
-The older versions of Windows read it as 2GB.
-CPU-Z is still reading it as 2GB.
-Changing the slots did not help.
-And I ran MemTest86 with no errors.

Help me get my PC to be as fast as it once was (it wasn't that fast to begin with, but it was much better than now).

Thank you guys!
