Hey there! The title says it all. I've installed Windows 7 on my pc and here I am sitting wondering if my computer is better off with XP. I don't have a super fancy pc, these are my systemspecs.
____________________________________

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7057)
System Manufacturer: FUJITSU SIEMENS
System Model: D2175-A1
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Dedicated Memory: 508 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Native Mode: 1280 x 1024(p) (60.020Hz)

Why I ask this is because I love playing around in Windows 7, but I really want to be able to play the games that I usually play in XP as well. World of warcraft and Battlefield Heroes. I haven't installed any of the games yet. So if there's anyone here with similar hardware who could tell me if my computer is too weak or not, i'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks for the replies! :)

I'm gonna install the x64 version tonight. But I need to be sure that there are drivers for my motherboard. I've been trying to find it. But no luck. If someone here could help me look for the drivers, that would be so great. :D

Motherboard.jpg
So, based on the information provided, my guess is that I'm looking for "Intel® 955X Express Chipset" drivers? I think I found some drivers for vista x64. But that won't work for the Windows 7 x64 version right?

Intel® 955X Express Chipset - Overview

Thanks guys!

Don't worry. You are way over the requirements ;)

For instance before January 2008, I had a P4 3GHz w/2GB of RAM and Ati Radeon X600 Pro 256MB and it ran Vista with Aero without any lags. So, if that config runs Vista with success, yours will be able to run Win7 with no difficulty at all. ;)

I'd say Stink's 3.4 GHz Dual-core is fancy, but certainly not super fancy :P

Super fancy are these two processors, the current creme ala creme for desktop and laptop respectively.

Desktop: Intel® Core™ i7-965 Extreme 3.2 GHz 8MB Cache
Laptop: Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad QX9300 2.53GHz 12MB Cache

The laptop one is actually the sexier one in my eyes, not as fast but a friend of mine has a laptop with one of them along with 4 GB RAM @ 1066 mhz and it's absolutely ridiculously fast, to the point that it can beat my desktop's Q6600 in some benchmarks. (Which is not common at all for a laptop to manage...)

Right on! :D

I installed Windows 7 build 7057 x64 - and im quite satisfied with the performance so far. I think the new ati radeon catalyst 9.3 drivers are acting up, I'm not sure. Gonna try out an earlier release (if there are any for windows 7?)

Anywho, I'm glad I installed the x64 version. Now I just have to find drivers for my motherboard, which most likely will be a bitch. :sarc:

Thanks for the replies! I think I'm falling in love with this forum.

Cheers!

So so so inaccurate. My grandmother had a 64 MB RAM 4 GB HD 700 mhz P3 that would most assuredly not run windows 7.

OK -- but your device needs be able to have enough space to BOOT Windows and have the full Intel instruction set.

I've booted windows om a VM with as little as 192 MB of RAM but you still need around 20 GB initial disk space to install it.

(BTW that P3 machine would still operate as a Linux server but whether you could get IDE drives large enough to make it worth while is another point I doubt if that motherboard has SATA or even USB2).

Perhaps I should have said any "standard Practicable " computer made since 2000 with at least 20 GB of free disk space and a bootable DVD / USB device. ( A Network boot won't be any good as you will need to install from the DVD / USB) You won't be able to directly update from Windows 98/Windows 2000/Windows Me or Windows XP

Not sure how many of those old 64 MB computers are still out there now.

Anyway point taken -- but the thrust of the post was any "Reasonable" computer should be W7 capable.

cheers

Yeah I'm pretty sure I could even toss 7 on my grandmother's POS Sempron with 1 Gb RAM and it'd run fine. (The 64 MB POS mentioned above is her old Win 98 PC, this one is newer and has Vista on it.)
