Why can't I change a "t" into a "T"?

On a file name I am simply trying to change a small t into a capital T. Clicking on the file to edit the name shows it taking the change until the highlight comes off and it reverts back to a small t. Upon highlighting the file enough to edit it again it shows the large T. Using the right click-rename option I get a message stating the new file is the same as the source. Any ideas as to what could be doing this?

I have Windows 7 Home Premium.

Go to folder ....right click...rename ....then name it.

You may have done it this way, but I have no way of knowing what course of action you took.


If that is what you tried, do this. Change it to something really different. Then rename the way you want.

Something on your system is set to only allow lowercase names in file/folder names.
I have looked around, but can't find where this might be set

Could be a program you installed or specific software you installed for your keyboard settings?

Have you tried opening a CMD prompt and typing:

ren "K:\MyFiles\test.txt" "K:\MyFiles\Test.txt"

Most recent example:

Note the period after Jr.

Windows Explorer insists on Sammy Davis Jr, without a period.

I have also seen Microsoft Excel refuse to acknowledge the sum of 3 adjacent cells.

A1 contains 1
B1 contains 2
C1 contains 3

Excel says A1 plus B1 plus C1 is 4, ignoring B1. No amount of fiddling, formatting, column deletion, etc could resolve it.

That worked... I had to change the name to something else first. Then I have to go back in to change it back. Turning one step into three... Now that's an improvement! (NOT!)

It was my thought that the new was too close to the old. The computer could differentiate the subtle difference.

i guess this is off topic, but its the same process on my mobile (N73) and that is Symbian OS

I think this is a symptom of the fact that Windows is (and always has been) case insensitive. It will allow you to name a file "test" or "TEST" but wll not allow two files in the same folder, one named "test" and the other "TEST".

I've encountered the "problem" described by the OP and the only solution I have been able to come up with is to rename "test" to something completely different, for example, "est" and then to "TEST".

Just tested in Excel 2010 beta, reports 6. Weird Excel 2007 bug?

I only saw it happen once, in Excel 2003. The numbers in question were not 1, 2, and 3--I mentioned those only as an example--but they were ordinary directly entered numbers.

I could never replicate the problem in another file, but in that particular Excel file, I could never get rid of it. It was a large and ornate file, so I couldn't just start over. I did start over on the specific worksheet in that file, but it didn't help, nor did copying, renaming, etc, etc.

I remember taking a gander in Google at Excel issues, and there are sites mentioning stuff like this. I can understand that considering the jillion lines of code in the program--it will always be a work in progress.
