reserving IP addresses?

Can you reserve ip addresses using windows 7 professional or can u only do that with a OS that has DHCP. What is the main purpose of reserving an IP address?

Um could you explain a bit further. The OS doesnt 'reserve' an ip range. win 7 can use static IP addressing as can all OS'es. To reserve implies hold for future use. That is more the realm of routers, and switches

A DHCP address is dynamic and you are given an address from a pool. A static address means that your computer has a permanently assigned address that is not assigned from a pool.

A DHCP reservation says that you provide the DHCP server with the MAC address of your network card. And then when your machine turns on and broadcasts for a DHCP address, the DHCP server sees that it's coming from a MAC address with a reservation and it assigns the reserved address to the machine.

You cannot "reserve" an IP address at our level or for our level of use. IP address are normally reserved for big companies or the military. What you can do is maybe set the router to only allocate a set range of IPs, usually the router is the first IP off the network and any subsequent machines that are attached to the network will get allocated IPs larger than the router's. Where static IP is used, you can go outside this range.

Like I am using a DGL-4300 D link and it has that function in the router itself...

That's what i meant, however you wouldn't be calling this reserving would you as, the router just gives you the next available IP in thta range.

yeah that is true... i dont have it turned on...but i was just showing him that here is a function on some routers that have it.
