What don't you like about Windows 7?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Network transfer speeds are painfully slow and a networked drive is not entirely the same as a drive that's directly present in the system on which the OS is running.

I noticed this also. Network transfer speeds do seem slower in 7.

Home group? Don't like it. So far I have managed to avoid it. I haven't tried to network 2 Win 7 machines though. Is it avoidable when transferring between 2 Win 7 machines? I heard not.

Libraries don't work with the way I use windows. I don't like Apps searching my hard drive, and putting lists of my files in one place. That includes indexing! Call me paranoid. I would like libraries gone. Is there any way to disable libraries completely without resorting to a registry hack? If not, can I could confine them to one directory? Some people think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. Good for them/you. Please don't write and extol their virtues. I'm glad you like them. I would like the ability to remove them from MY machine(s)

You can set your own restore points.

Right click Computer in the Start Menue and select Properties. Click on System Protection. In the System Protection tab, the bottom button on the right creates a restore point.

What I don't like about windows 7 is people who moan about how much of a bad os it is, when really it's the operator.

sorry to say man, but thats quite an arrogant remark.

you have to respect that not everyone wants the same thing from an OS so one man's dream is another man's nightmare.

bitraker

I tried making a shortcut from the 'new' menu, and tried pinning it that way. It wants to pin it to the program that it uses to open - naturally, because the taskbar is an application launcher.

I think that if you tried the Recycle Bin trick, you could get a shortcut pinned to the taskbar. Just replace the recycle bin shortcut with your internet shortcut by:

Right clicking on the desktop, selecting new, then shortcut.
Type the internet address in the form that pops up, click next, name it, and click finish.
That will generate a shortcut to Google or Yahoo.

Then just use the Recycle Bin trick to pin that shortcut to the taskbar.

I agree. If you look more closely people are not ragging on the OS as a whole just the finer things that lack options that used to be there.

It's a bunch of little things that greatly impact the way some people use their computer and why should we/they have to have their user expererience be dictated by anyone of this community or of microsoft?

Look up Classic Shell. Obviously there is a need for reverting things back to the way they were or at least giving more options.

An OS (any software really) is only as powerful as its ability to be robust and flexible enough to adapt to it's users needs.

There are a few things that i dont like about Windows 7

the pinning of the icons to the task bar. I would prefer to have a icon disapear when i am done with it. Just like Windows XP, i like to have a clear taskbar when i am not runnning anything.

I also dont like the all Programs menu, i would prefer to have a "jump out" list, instead of the one that overlays it.

Other than that i think its a very good OS. if Windows 7 didnt come out, i would stay with windows XP, i personally hav never used Windows Vista, but i know several people who just cannot stand it, and they are always having trouble

One new thing that's happening with Win 7 is that Explorer.exe keeps crashing when entering various directories. It's really strange behavior and I've NEVER had this happen with XP or Vista. Really making me furious with the OS. I went in and deleted all the items in the Temp folder, which is even more hidden now so had to do a search for it! Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing this? I think I made a proper thread about this issue but not one reply and that was a couple of weeks ago. So with this thread very active still I thought I'd bring it up here.

Thanks kindly!

Even though I have a gaming PC I bought it for it's power so I could do my 2D and 3D work without being hampered too much!
Actually the explorer crashing problem started with XPsp3 and continued through vista and now W7.

And yes it is infuriating.

With a lot of spelunking you can fix it but what has most likely happened is that a codec of some kind for some file type has been registered that's buggy and every time explorer tries to open that folder it invokes the codec to provide you with "rich" information about the file (a feature included in XP SP3). and either a relly buggy codec or a slightly buggy file is causing it.

This kind of thing should NOT be happening in W7 at all and frankly I'd be rolling heads on the explorer team about it (I would have rolled heads when XPSP3 came out and the problem reared it's head).

You might be able to minimize it by hiding the details pain and any preview panes and setting your entire HD tree to "Documents" view, but one shouldn;t have to go through that kind of thing ever again (and certainly not by now).

Why should it not be happening in Windows 7? Did Microsoft task themselves with fixing all of the buggy third-party software? Might just be me and my lack of third-party software, but no Explorer crashes here.

No, but they should be protecting themselves FROM buggy third party software. And clearly they are not.

If the codec crashes, explorer should merely not get the infformation it wanted. It should not put itself inthe position of letting someone else trash it.

Explorer also has a similar problem with buggy control panels.

I'm sort of particularly annoyed about this becuase 1) I know if I were coding on it or in charge of the product it would not be happening as I know how to protect my code from such things (or at WORST it would happen ONCE and never again). and 2) This very bug hit me at work once and I was forced to /break/ the AVI file format in order to stop tripping it on XPSP3, even though my file output was completely well formed. :/

Sure, but there is a limit to how much protection you can put in place. Depending how the extension digs itself into Explorer. The only true protection is not allowing third-party software plug itself into Explorer. However, that is not very useful is it?

Extensive work was already put into protected Explorer for third-party software, for example thumbnail creation. Adobe stopped developing a means for PSD and AI documents having a thumbnail handler for Explorer so an older one had to be use. The one for Illustrator would never work for Vista or 7 instead it always crashed, but Explorer did not.

How to Disable “Libraries” Feature in Windows 7? - Tweaking with Vishal

Will show you how to disable libraries and also a link on that page to another article on how to disable homegroups.
Thank you BunBun, I followed the link, and it lead to a registry hack (Hack/Script Same/Same). I realize I will have to run this hack or another like it to get what I want. It's a personal gripe. You shouldn't have to.
What I would like to see is a way for anyone to disable it from the GUI. I looked in services.msc and could not find it.

Is that the actual model number of the printer? HP wrote Win 7 Drivers for a lot of printers already in service. I have personaly installed 3 different models on Win 7 Computers. I had to go to HP.com and download the drivers. The Install disks were useless for drivers.

1-It is not open source-I actually had to pay for it

No body forced you to get Windows. Go use Linux if you don't want to spend money. Also Open Source does not equate to free as in beer. I am more then welcome to charged for access to binaries (compiled code) or the source code. However, as long as the source code is freely viewable that qualifies as open source.

My only issue with windows 7 is that creative titanium does not support the OS as it should and that really is not windows 7's fault. I find it hard to get the titanium program to interact with cyberlink 7 and 9 ultra when using the SPDIF output. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled everything yet there is always a problem with interfacing the audio. The Creative software is always in conflict with the ATI audio drivers.
