cloned Windows 7, need to change PATHNAME to drive D?

how can I do a mass drive change, to every single file, exe, sys, EVERYTHING, to get the OS in sync with drive D?

It originally came from Drive C, and nothing works, even if I try to start stuff manually it doesn't work.

EVERYTHING for this windows 7 is in Drive D... the Pathnames and targets for all the files are set to run in Drive C... So how can I change it?

It gives Itself Drive D: The thing is, I cloned it from Drive C, and I wiped out Drive C, and installed vista onto it. So since the Windows 7 on Drive C, and Drive D were the same, everything worked, because the Path was Set for C, when 7 was still there.

Now that The 7 on Drive C is gone, it can't find anything. Explorer.exe won't even fire up... I tried to start it from D:\Windows\Explorer.exe and it couldn't run, because everything needed to run Explorer.exe isn't running.

Anyway to fix this?

ADD: Do I need to change the paths in Registry..?

From your description, it appears the 7 drive letter has changed in the system registry.

You can change it back to C .

You would need to load the registry externally to do it.

Easiest to use Normal Mode> Boot Corrector>change drive letters in system registry on the free bootable Paragon app:FREE Rescue Kit Express | PARAGON Software Group - free partition ...

Yes, the Drive letter did change, to make a long story short, vista recovery only can install on drive C, and Windows 7 was originally there, so I just used a disk cloner and moved it to my D partition.

What didn't work - what exactly did you do - to which registry, and what is the result?

I may have misunderstood what you were trying to say.

There are 3 different sets of drive letters.

The drive letters you see from windows installation environment ( when you boot the dvd ) are listed in the order the partitions are found, primaries first, by convention starting with C.

That is not necessarily the same as the drive letters in the Vista registry. Those are what you see when boot into Vista.

Both of those are not necessarily the same as the letters in the 7 registry - those are what you see when you boot into 7.

If the 7 drive letter within the 7 registry had changed - you wouldn't be able to get to the desktop - and would almost certainly get the Windows not genuine message.

It appears that is not what happened.

What letter did 7 originally see itself as when you booted into it?

Ok, can I just back up the registry and apply it to the new installation? and then copy the Program Files list back over as well?

Alright, I'll just back up my Documents and stuff on my 7 and just reinstall it. You're right about it leading to more problems. Software doesn't like to be changes, especially OSes and drive letters. If I just keep doing run arounds I'll just cause more problems and waste time.
