Driver issue, or is my hardware bad.

Yesterday I decided to take apart my case and clean everything, and I cleaned EVERYTHING. The mobo, HDD's, gfx cards, sound cards and everything.

I have been using an ATI RADEON X850XT PE for about a year now, and it doesn't support pixel shader 3.0 so then I decided to put in a ATI RADEON X1600 instead. I sued to use the x1600 three years ago before I got my x850.

After I put in the x1600 i botted up Win7 and then everythign worked fine, so I went and installed the x1600 drivers, but halfway throu the driver installaion i started seeing rainbow colors oving across th screen, then really bad errors like the moue cursor coming up 10 times and then spots of the screen jsu8t going black. Thhis all happened during the driver intsallation so I cant turn off the computer. Right whn it was about to finish... BSOD

I don't think that this is a driver issue, the three years thati didn't use the x1600 I took very bad care of it, it was laying on the floor, someone probably stepped on it, I'm in south florida so tempratures go above 40C.

So then i thougt, alright my the card is probably bad, I'll just put my x850 back. SO then I put the x850 back into my computer and booted up. It started up Win7 (automatically put resolution to 800x600 for some reason) and i logged into my user account, it did some startup things, started FileZilla, started ATITool and it even showed my temprature on the screen (39C, that's very good for where i live). Then I thought, OK all is good and I put m resolution back up to 1200x1000 (something like that, don't remember the number) and then after 5 seconds more... BSOD

Right now I am running ubuntu live CD so that i can run this, and ths is working fine :)

(I must run Ubuntu in safe grafics mode, or else it wont boot up. It was always like this before...)

(Whenever I run Win7 in safe mode it loads upall the windows files and then BSOD's immediatly before it actually starts up.)

(When i run system restore it lets me choose my restore point I want to go to, then it says "catastrofic error" and closes system restore.)

Why such an old card? I'd run through the hardware section in my troubleshooting guide in my sig. I would have gone for an ATI 54xx series.

Did you uninstall the old drivers before putting the other card in? If not, boot to safemode and uninstall ALL VGA drivers and restart and the correct ones will be installed by windows. You can then update using ATI website if you want.

It's the same drivers for both cards so i don't think that it matters. I probably damaged the card while I was cleaning it with a brush.

The problem is that I cannot get into safe mode, when I try to get into safe mode I will just BSOD

Right now I just tried it again, I booted into Windows 7 (regular mode) and then used it, uninstalled some gfx card drivers and listened to some music. Then after 15 mins all of a sudden the computer froze, I could not move my mouse, and then I see the screen that looks like y graphics card overheating (colors mushed up everywhere) for a second and then BSOD.

I saw the temperature of the card in the corner of my screen when this happened thou, it was 41C and that is VERY good for where I live so it is definitely NOT overheating!

Another thing that i noticed is that random programs stopped working, I run Digsby (IM Program) at start-up and it usually works fine, but after I cleaned my case it stopped working, it will just say "Not Responding" :/

The Windows 7 Startup Repair will just BSOD while repairing so that is very odd...

Now, the question is, will my new gfx card fix this problem or is there another problem, maybe the mobo?

EDIT: I tired to just uninstall all of these drivers... Now it works again :D

I am able to put my resolution on max and it is still working perfectly!
