Doesn't seem to be as good as Vista

So I recently went to Windows 7 due to all the hype and talk of how great it is. I never had issues with Vista but I decided to move to W7 either way since a friend offered me his 64Bit CD because he only needed the 32Bit and $30 dollars later I had Windows 7 Ultimate ( Bought key on ebay, hence the "$30 dollars".. I know most don't advise that we do this but I already did so I hope I don't get badgered to much over that fact).. My problem is W7 just seems to have some slow response issues and a slow start up.. Maybe I didn't install it properly? I did a boot from disk and advanced option during install for a clean install but I don't know if I was supposed to format or if it would do that automatically during a clean install... I did have the windows old file so I don't think it formatted unless that would appear no matter what? After installing some software and games I finally got around to installing o&o defrag and running it but I didn't expect it to show very much fragmentation since I was on a new install which was not the case because it was around 37.00 fragmentation which I brought down to nothing within a couple hours but I still don't understand why it was so high on a fresh Windows install

what happened was you did an upgrade install that is why you have been left with a windows.old file and also the cause of your problems , reinstall using the clean install method and you will see a vast improvement, post back with any problems you have

You don't get a windows.old folder if you do an in-place upgrade installation.

You get it if you do a custom install , without formatting the target partition.

OMG.. Doing this all over again is going to be such a pain... then reinstalling everything I have already installed after the Windows 7 move... Thanks for the replies though... I really appreciate it : )

Do it the easy way. Do not reinstall all of your programs all at once. Just install as you need them. That is what I did when I installed 7 and it really was not bad.

There should not be a performance problem if properly installed. That is one of the advantages of Win7 - it is faster and has a smaller footprint than Vista. There are a few other features that are also superior to Vista (Taskbar, Libraries, Trim support, Homegroup, etc.). But in terms of overall function, I prefer Vista too. They have added a lot of eye candy to Win7 but deleted many useful Vista function in the process. Besides, the interface to get to the system settings is a real mess. You have to be a good scout to find them.

With all due respect, it doesn't sound like you're able to make such a comment just yet as your issue is with a poor installation.

True enough.. but why does it make such a difference ? If I only upgraded why would it have issues... They offer a upgrade which means it should go smoothly... why offer an upgrade if everyone should just format and clean install

Upgrades have always been a mess with Windows. I remember helping someone to upgrade from Vista Basic to Premium and it was a horror story. Since you have the option to do a clean install, I recommend you use it.

An upgrade is like a car, you can paint, wash and wax it, the problems still remain. If you had corruption, virus or anyother problems they carry to the upgrade.

Vista and 7 are similar under the hood, the upgrade just changes whats there, problems and all.

Hope this helps a bit - I bought the upgrade iso from the Microsoft store, pre-order was to good to pass on. Anyhow I did a successfull clean install with it, full version.

Ballistic; you probably feel screwed either way so I think you have two choices because the third is stick with what you got.
1. Go back to Vista, if you liked it and it suited your PC it's got quirks but works.
2. Clean Install of 7 to your formatted disk. If activation gives you any crapp MS will fix you up.

This thread is misleading. Please change the title. As for the speed problem,
i gave a response to another person earlier in another thread, dont know which
one.
Just start the al tab thing, check the processes that is using the most harddrive
stuff and stop the processes. Some of the security and old programs working on
vista dont work on seven , so you might have to find the upgraded versions.
Relax, win7 is far superior.
