Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7

This is one update that I shall NOT install.

That is one link that I could do without.

Nor me, on my four machines.

Sorry Micorsoft. ET is going to have to use someone else's computer to phone home...

i think we all agree ratepv needs to pull that link. no one wants it.

It's a wonderful research tool. I've downloaded it onto a test box to see what it does... I KNOWINGLY have loaded a bad windows unto my CAT. If she begins behaving strangely, wants to use the telephone more than usual, won't use the little box (my CAT does not litter, she's green) then I'll call y'all from the linux side and tell how it all works. I will throw this out -- the CAT might not work outside the box unless we watch. I hope there's no gas -- ES

This is not the patch but a loader for it. It is kinda cute the way it works. So far after working on the drive I've seen a patch for loaders very similar to something else. I'm going offline for a few hours to see why some filbert would leave their shell in this thing...

The thing that I find "interesting" is that anyone would even consider the possibility of installing this update for any reason. There is no "extra" that MS could offer me that would make me even think twice about accepting this. I expect that sooner or later, they will repackage this spybot either under a different kb # or stick it inside of something else that we are accustomed to...without telling even that writer of the OP's article. I hope that someone develops a scanner to detect it or a network detection device that would block it.

I really do not care about any claims that MS is just looking out for "our" welfare, and even if they were only doing this for their own, it wouldn't take long before this would probably have even greater ramications. MS could extend their scope of operations to becoming the spybot capitol for every other software manufacturer interested in protecting their interests. This is almost as bad as DRM, and potentially far worse.

If that happens, then I will disable updates altogether, and if that creates too much of a problem, I will uninstall the OS. I have no idea of what you are speaking of in reference to XP. There is nothing that I'm aware of that would prevent a person from accessing XP updates, except basic activation, and even that only applied to certain updates. Many updates are availablle via regular download without even having to validate for the download.

i am talking about WGA when they started that for XP i believe it was not mandatory but if you did not install it you could not get critical updates

I guess that would depend on how you define "critical". It has been my experience that the updates that were not available without WGA were more in the order of added features. Things that I would deem as critical are available without validation.

I suspect that while currently this is sort of a voluntary update, that it will be incorporated in SP1, whenever that is released, and there will no longer be a choice, without not installing the SP. Considering the remaining bugs in the system, I don't consider that an attractive thought. I've been willing to overlook the small flaws until now, but the idea of having to wait to install the SP until I know that it is clean, or figure out a way to block it, doesn't make me so tolerant as before.

Perhaps, but that case also set a Precedent, which in the law has a strong bearing on future decisions.
