Cant install 64bit but 32bit works fine

Hello, i am a newbie to this forum, so if i leave any relevant info out apologies in advance.
I have recently built a new htpc (i listed all specs) all the hardware i purchased was brand new. i had win xp and tried to upgrade to win 7 64bit but kept getting blue screened, so then i tried win 7 32-bit , this worked fine, so then i tried to upgrade from win 7 32 bit to 64 bit and it didn't work. so i bought an oem version of windows 7 64-bit, thinking that it was a upgrade issue(32-bit to 64 bit), and sold the upgrade package, to my dissmay i cannot install windows 7 64-bit on my pc i keep getting different blue screen errors. So what have i done to try and fix it. Tried installing on different hard drives, tried installing in safe mode(i get quite far in safe mode right up until it has to re-boot) Flashed the bios, disabled caching, tried different video adapters -HDMI, VGA DVI (same graphics card), tried repairing it using the install disk, Reset all the hardware to ensure it is in properly. I think the problem is a driver but not sure which one, i know the hardware works as i can run win xp and 7 32-bit - but i need win 7 64-bit. Please help thanks

Rather than guess, lets be sure there are no valid reasons that you cannot install 64 bit.

Hi mtshil and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

You cannot upgrade a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit one (or vice-versa) because of the difference in system architecture. It needs to be a clean installation. Have a look here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor. To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable, do the following:
1. Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Performance Information and Tools.
2. Click View and print details.
3. In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type. Under 64-bit capable, you can see whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)

Win 7 32 and 64 bit

I have a PC thats runs 32 bit Windows 7 perfectly but will not load the 64b bit version. I have checked that the PC hardware will support 64 bit. When I try to load 64 bit as soon as the starting windows message appears it freezes with the message unexpected error status 0xc000225. Any ideas?

I have checked that my system will run 64 bit with the upgrade advisor and no issues where highlighted, i have done a clean install with a new oem full version of win 7 64-bit- and still the blue screen issues persist (various errors) my pc has the latest hardware so it should support 64-bit arch. i am not running a raid drive just sata hdd. I have install ubuntu 64 bit just to check and this worked.

Check your BIOS settings.

64bit requires an APIC (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller) to be present and enabled.

1) Switch on the computer and press a key (normally F1, F2 or <DEL>) to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.

2) Find a setting that enables the APIC eg IOAPIC=enabled. If this is set to disabled then enable it.

3) Save the BIOS Settings and exit.

4) Allow the computer to boot.

thanks, bsod errors still happening, install gets to the point where it needs to reboot then it loops into rebooting.then a black screen appears saying that windows did not shut down properly and you get bsod udfs file system error

Some times Win 7 will not install with more than 2g of ram.

You can add more when install.

It's hard to guess what the problem is.

An X58/ Core I7 920 system should be fine with X64. (See my system specs.)

All that I can suggest is a minimalist install: have the minimum number of devices present during the installation, to minimize the number of drivers Win7 attempts to install.

I thought that the 350W PSU might be a little marginal, but according to:

eXtreme Power Supply Calculator

you should be fine.

I had no difficulty installing Win7 X64 with 12GB of RAM installed, but I am not relying on the SPD settings; I've manually set the RAM timings and voltage in the BIOS.

64 bit windows 7 loading

I reduced my RAM to 2gb and lo and behold 64bit loaded fine!!!

I then added an additional 2gb RAM and still no problem.

So it appears that Windows 7 64 bit does have some problems with loading on some systems with more than 2gb RAM.

thanks this worked!!!! but i think i might have got to the root cause of the issue... my lan driver. windows keeps keeps disabling the lan driver and i can connect to the internet. i have tried to update the lan driver from asus and realtek but still no luck? any thoughts
