Backup Software - Use Built-In Windows 7 or Other?

Both methods are very fast and easy to set up. For instance using Virtual PC it's just a few mouse clicks and a couple of seconds to set up a second vhd to an existing virtual machine.

There are cons, too: first, you need to have Virtual PC and at least one virtual machine installed. Second, Virtual PC does not accept vhd's over 127 gigs.

Disk Management option does not have this size limit.

1. create an image of drive d to yeolimagofdrived.wim with label of "Drive D"
imagex /capture d: d:\yeolimagofdrived.wim "Drive D"

2. "mount" the image to C:\mymountedwim
imagex /mount d:\yeolimageofdrived.wim 1 c:\mymountedwim

OR

DISM.exe /Mount-Wim /WimFile:d:\yeolimageofdrived.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\mymountedwim

Go to a command prompt and type:
imagex /? (if imagex is on your system)
dism /?

Karl, I can just see the 400 little old ladies in my Florida computer club do that. They would probably run as fast as they can (if they can run) when they saw your guidance - LOL. I teach a Macrium class there - and even as simple as that is, they are baffled. Clicking on a XML definition file and then the cog wheel is two steps to many for them.
