The Problem

Whenever a USB 2.0 MassStorage device (External Harddrive and USB's) is plugged into my computer the screen freezes and there is no way to move anything, restart is required and the USB item has to be removed to allow startup to work. However USB Keyboards, Mic, Game Controlers do not freeze the computer only storage devices.

The Temporary Fix

Disabling USB 2.0 support in the bios has given me a temporary fix on this problem. A whopping 600kb/s transfer rate to and from my pc is not enough, so this fix is very unreliable. I do not believe enabling/disabiling legacy does anying.

The Computer

CPU: Pentium Dual-Core E5200 @ 2.50GHz
RAM: 2x2.00 GB of PC2-6400 Kingston
VCARD: Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3
MOTHERBOARD: EG31M-S2 Rev 2.0 Up to date bios
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate

Conclusion

Now does anyone know how to fix this? I asked a guy at a local Joyce Mayne and he said I have to update my motherboards peripherals firmware but I can find an update along those lines on the manufactures website.

Thanks, Smile.

While you should update all yours drivers and your BIOS, I think we could use more info.

What does event viewer say?

Are all the drivers current and working in device manager?

Etc

I Have had the OS for awhile now and all drivers have been updated, I have tried checking event viewer but even a pretty PC savvy person as myself I can't see anything wrong with what happens before crashing. It just says the usual happens it detects the usb and thats it before the crash. You really want me to have to restart my computer over and over again like I have before... if so please tell me what I'm looking for in event viewer unless you just want a screen shot? and also have this picture of bootup.

EDIT: Also reinsallted to OS 2 times after this problem arose and to no luck it is still happening.
EDIT2: Going to crash my pc and take a pic of event viewer for applications for you guys and the extact time i put the usb in.
EDIT3: Checking Event Logs and nothing errored at the time of insertion, at or near when i put it in only new events popped up at the when I turned the pc off being the 41 Kernel-Power was when I turned the pc off illegally myself.

same problem no answers from microsoft all drivers up to date! and blue screen shortly after initiating functions on external drives and cameras (blue screen) i thought at first it might be a ram problem so i added more memory to 4 gigs! the internet and hovering run great but the minute usb devices are plugged in its the same story! could the os require a lot more memory say 16 gig to operate usb 2.0 i dont know but iam not going to spend the money until someone can come up with an answer! after a 2 hr chat session today with ms no conclusions were reached, according to them my system is operating perfectly!!!!

i think that the ram specs for running 7 32 or 64 are just that mininums 1.0 to run 7 32 bit and 2.0 gig to run 64 bit why didnt someone tell us before running 7, you need to upgrade video and audio cards and ram to possibly 16 gig ram to properly run all apps xp worked fine with only 1.o gig now aero is going to cost mega bucks just because of cpu needs!! what ms is telling you is to buy a new computer!! one that has the same version of windows that you are running already!! there has to be an answer!!!

Interesting to see this post

I have a Viliv X70 UMPC and the only problem i have with it are these random lock ups which really pissed me off because I still cant figure out why (nothing helpful in event viewer, all drivers are up to date).

I do however suspect that the USB controller could be a culprit because the lock up seems less frequent when I disable the "USB selective suspend" setting. Note I say less frequent, but still not completely cured. In my case the lock up happens not immediately on insertion, but randomly later.

Like I said, I suspect that it could be related to USB controller on my unit because again, if I don't insert any usb device, the lock up appears much less frequent.

Unfortunately on my UMPC, trying to completely not ever have to use any usb device is nearly impossible ;(. The wireless NIC is SDIO with the SD controller being linked to USB controller. Bluetooth is also USB related.

If you have enough unpowered USB devices it could cause a voltage drop that would lock you up. How many total and how many unpowered?

No update yet, IT teachers are suggesting my drive letters are the same, my usb defaults to J:/ and i dont have a J drive so its not the problem.

That program would be great if the only thing that freezes the computer is physically plugging in a usb.

Okay I'm definitely having the same problem. I'm 100% sure it is not a hardware issue for the fact that it is only MassStorage devices that make my computer freeze, and it is every single one of my USB ports that cause it to freeze.
I have tried an External Hard Drive (which has a power cord) as well which covers the question if the USB is taking power away from the computer also. I'm not sure what could be the problem and it annoys me.
