The processing power of a new machine today compared to the last time machines cam preloaded woith Xp is INSANE.
There have been massive speed increases in processors in the last 4 years. Compare an i7 to a core 2 duo even an i5 compared to a core 2 duo, the hot new processor towards the end of XPs shelf life. Same goes for video cards. A new gaming rig today with W7 would blow doors off anything at any price 4 years ago running XP
Companies generally don't upgrade their machines until the first patch is released for the OS in question. Many, if not all, companies are still using older versions such as XP, especially after the Vista was released. But while Win 7 is pretty mature to us here, for a company it is still very new. I don't blame them for waiting or choosing not to upgrade to Win 7 just yet, let MS iron out the "unknown bugs" before you put your workers computers and servers on the line.
Now for the general public, most people don't upgrade their OS on it's own. They will go out and buy a new computer when something goes wrong with their current machine, or they if they are buying the computer for something (school, work, etc.). Computer enthusiasts, such as many here, are much different from the general customers. While we feed on the latest builds, fastest processors, and latest computer components; the general population have the "as long as it does what I want it to do, I don't care" mind state-- Don't fix if it isn't broken, don't upgrade if it runs.
This is the reason that Vista and Seven's performance is accepted and perceived as superior to XP by casual consumer computer users. When I returned to XP after using the newer operating systems (especially Vista) I found that XP ran smoother and quicker while doing my work. I realize that XP's days are numbered and I am not recommending it for everyone, but if you are a power user, play games, or work with video/3D animation you will likely to be surprised how well XP still performs on systems it was not even designed to work on.
The latest is not always greatest.
to use the car analogy (again) its like taking a morris minor and sticking a V8 in it, then saying its faster than a modern ford focus

In my computer club we still teach "XP for beginners" - and there are a lot of takers. Mostly older ladies where the husband died and they are now faced to deal themselves with the PC they happen to have at home (that's Florida). Most of those ladies are not inclined to buy anything new - unless the PC drops dead. For their 5 emails per week it does the job.
I think maybe a lot of those clinging to XP simply are afraid of change.![]()

That and older hardware. If it works, why change?
Articles like this frustrate me personaly. they never see it as, some people like myself can not afford W7, I have Three computers in my home. Two desktops run XP and the lap top runs Linux. My wife could care less as long as iTunes works and she can sync her phone and check her e-mail, The laptop is for e-mail and quick searches from the den, Then there is my desktop. Again I can't afford W7 and Linux is NOT an option due to the fact that I do Home audio recording and my sound card is not compatible with any linux distro.
They make it seem that my life is useless and I am stupid for not upgrading. It just really frustrates me to hear how outdated and stupid I am for wanting to stay with XP. I disagree 100%!
I did read it and I do realize it is more for small buisness, but I have read comment after comment and article after article saying the same thing about home users. I do like W7 and my company is going to it, using it now as a tester for the company, but some people just can't afford it.

I don't think that most people (article including) are saying that everyone needs to upgrade to W7 today on all machines. It's more that it's not smart to /avoid/ upgrading when you do need to replace hardware.
My main comment on the situation is that you use the OS that comes with the next computer upgrade. No you don't have to upgrade to W7 today. But when people do upgrade their machines then downgrade their OS to XP on the new hardware /that's/ when the points in this article really start to make make sense. You end up spending more time and money on maintaining old software on old OSes than you do by moving forward in a "timely" fasion. And for buisness that may be 3-4 years
If your personal machine does everything you need it to today and still does 5 years from now. Then there's really no problem, as long as the hardware lasts.
