You can use it plugged in, just every once in a while, use it on battery power.

I run on A/C and remove the battery from my HP Laptop for regular use at home. Once a month or so I will insert the battery and charge it up then remove the battery again.

Thanks Peb, second time in two days u have helped me here! Repped and will rep Barman too and will have a read. Thanks again.

Actually, the other smart thing to do is what the guy above you said. Just remove the battery when you're not using it. Best way to preserve it.

I'm gonna rep you for that. See, that's what I was talking about. Keeping it plugged in 24/7 will destroy your battery in a matter of months. Even if you find no need to unplug it, do it anyways and then plug it back in later on (don't let it die though). It's just maintenance.

Thanks again for the clarification too Fred, this is what I'll start to do then. Many thanks also.

Does indeed sound like an excellent idea. Only problem I have is this: when the battery is removed there is no replacement panel cover (lots of laptops have this design fault and i always find it annoying!). Will what you and others suggested also suffice: every week or so, remove from the mains and run from battery?

Thanks peb, sorry forgive my naivety, is the dummy battery actually just a dead battery? I might have to make contact with HP-Compaq then.

Thanks Peb, obviously it's not a one size fits all so I'll have to make contact with HP. Things like that really irk me off; they should simply include in the box! Anyway, even if i can't purchase I will do as you folk suggested: every week run only from the battery and then plug back in. Thanks all as always for your patience and help.
