When I right-click the Start button and select "Open Windows Explorer", nothing happens.

Using the Windows Explorer link in the Start Menu or anywhere else works fine...

Where are the settings for that "Open Windows Explorer" option stored? Has anyone seen this problem?

Hello,

How long has this been going on?

You may want to try a system files check. Open an elevated command prompt and enter sfc /scannow.

Hello Welcome to SF,

I guess the problem is with the Context Menu. Download ShellExView

The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Hope this helps,
Captain

It's been broken for quite some time, I just got annoyed with it enough to ask now. I ran "sfc /scannow" and it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Capt.Jack Sparrow your link just takes me to http://www.sevenforums.com/ . Malformed link perhaps?

Anyway, I found ShellExView. Disabling the only 4 non-MS handlers (igfxpph, 7-zip, WinMerge, VMWare Virtual Disk) did not seem to fix it. Do I need to reboot after disabling them?

Is there anywhere else I can look?

Click on Start button, right Click on All Programs and choose Open. It should open an explorer window.
Better still Winkey+E.

Hello jetspeedz, welcome to Seven Forums!

Hello ghazel.

Here's a tutorial for the option that JK suggested, at the link below; be sure to keep us informed.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html?ltr=S

If the above action did not help, have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it runs from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and is sometime more successful because it runs 'outside' of Windows; be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

I appreciate the suggestion but I have already done that as well with no results. I don't and will not rebuild the system. It is just something I will live with unless there is some tweak or reg fix someone can post.

Yes i have that turned off a long with a list of other services which are useless for my use.

Do you think Indexing is causing this?

I run SSD's which is why i have it turned off.

I have it on the task bar next to the start orb. Windows + e works well also. I don't use a ssd at the present time so I can't help you their. Hang in there, some body will come along that can answer that for you. At least I hope so because I have a ssd for my next build. Another though, because you are already using a ssd start a new trend, (what services should I turn off when using a ssd). It would be helpful to many up coming ssd users. My understanding is that Windows Explorer uses indexing.
THANKS Layback Bear.
