24 X DVD Burner

I was shopping for a new burner, when I noticed that LG has a model that is supposed to write at 24X. As far as I know, there is no media available that fast...is there? If not, what is the point in these faster drives?

IMO its more of a sales thing but what most people dont still know is you should burn at the lowest speed, if you burn at a higher speed its has a higher chace of failing the burn.

Yep! Faster speeds = much higher chances of multiple cupholders being created! The faster it writes, the higher chance for a sector to be skipped/written wrong, and all it takes is a single bit of data in the wrong spot to ruin the CD - I always make it a point to write at 2x or 4x speed even though I can do 5 times that, slow and steady wins the race in cd/dvd/bluray burning!

Yes, I do understand that the tortoise wins the race, but I'm wondering if a faster burner makes it possible to speed the tortoise up some?

The Sony Optiarc and the pioneer drives up to 217 (218 was the first to use the mediatek) have the NEC controllers.

Basically the difference is that the NEC controllers allow for a better/reliable burn at a higher speeds.

And there are several brands of media rated to burn @ x24 DVD+R, DVD-R

I have been trying to avoid LG, not because of any controller issue...though that is good to know, but because I really dislike the loud clack that the one that I do have makes when opening the tray.

TBH, I really don't know. I've always had great success with Sony Optical 16x media across several burners with a 12x/x16 setting for both DVD movies, videos, OS discs etc, so I've never felt compelled to look for alternative media.

I just went on a hunt for 24x and the results were non-existent. I'm starting to think I might have imagined it, or confused it with something else.

This is strange. I ordered a Sony Optiarc from Amazon a couple of days ago, but decided to cancel the order a couple of hours later, because I realized that I got mixed up and ordered one with the NEC controller, instead of the Mediatek controller as you recommended, but it would not even begin to let me, it said that it was already being processed for shipping and couldn't be canceled or changed.

Since I had not received anything from them via email about the sale...even an acknowledgement that the order was placed, I just went back to my Amazon account, and it doesn't list the order at all.

I usually make copies of the receipts, but somehow I failed to do so this time, so I have nothing to so for proof of it if needed. I say if needed, because so far there has not been a draft on my account for the sale, so for all practical purposes it doesn't seem to exist. It was only for $28, so there isn't a lot involved, but every dollar counts. If something doesn't happen in a week or so, I'll just go shopping again.

Actually, if you re-read my post, it was a drive with a NEC controller I recommended, so you did order the right one

That's pretty poor form on Amazons behalf. I'd definitely keep an eye on your bank records, especially if no drive appears.

That's no problem, because I'm a real bad record keeper, and have to keep a running tab on my account anyway. If I don't, I would really get lost, because the majority of bank transactions are PayPal, and they are coded in a fashion that is indecipherable, without cross checking the PayPal account to the bank account, and if not done soon, PayPal and my bank doesn't permit access online to very old records. I generally just look at the amounts and to whom paid.

I found it important to track in this fashion anyway, because I found one payment made to a company that I never heard of for a product that I never ordered, however PayPal had nothing to do with it. Somehow that scammer got my account info and just hit it for a nonauthorized payment. I had to close that account and open another, and the bank refunded the payment. Believe it or not, they did send me the item they claimed that I ordered, several months late, so I guess they were just covering their tails. I never bothered to return it to them, nor did I ever use it.

I normally just use direct debit for online purchases which is helpful, as I'm also pretty bad at keeping records

I have a Pay Pal acc, but I've never used it so I wasn't aware they had coded transactions. Plus I tend to hear more about the 'downsides' to Pay Pal than the good, and so far it hasn't been worth the hassle to use.

But keeping an eye on the amounts is a good thing. So at least if Amazon do draw on your account, you'll have some form of record.

Who knows, you might even get 'lucky' twice and receive a free DVD burner... unlikely though

I have heard tales about PayPal, but I have used them well over 200 times without a problem so far...knock on wood. It seems that most often when I hear something bad about them, it is from a seller that believes that PayPal defrauded them somehow, but I have never used it in that fashion, so that may be the difference.

I tend to like using PayPal, because it is easy to file a dispute, if there is a problem with a seller, and if the seller doesn't resolve a case, they may not be permitted to continue using PayPal, so that gives the buyer some leverage.

I guess that the bank may be able to resolve a dispute if needed, but not on as broad of a scale, and I don't think that the seller feels as much pressure as they do with PayPal. So, unless PayPal does me wrong, I'll stick with them.

My DVD burners at home/work are either Samsung, Lite-On or NEC.

My media of choice is Taiyo Yuden (which I typically order from rima.com or supermediastore.com) I pretty much buy the 8X media and my drives will recognize them as capable of 12X. 100 pack spindles usually run me around $22 when I buy them as I often buy spindles for people at work, etc.

I've burned with Roxio, CD Burner XP and now imgburn at full speed and have had less than 4 coasters in probably 400-500 discs burned. So, I typically burn full DVD's in about 8-9 minutes and don't have a need to verify.

Ditto. Why burn at x2 when you can burn at x12/x16 ?

I've personally haven't had to verify a burn in eons.

The main reason I use the Sony Optical media is because it's a 1 min drive to the supermarket and with such a high succesful burn rate, I haven't felt the need to change.

Although if the supermarket ever stops stocking them, I'll be straight onto the Taiyo Yuden's.

There is no delay with PayPal, if you provide them with two sources of payment. In my case, I gave them my bank account info (a small secondary account that I only keep enough in to cover transactions), and then a Visa debit card, which draws on the same account. I told them what I was doing, but it didn't seem to bother them, so I now have instant payments.

This kind of goes back to my original question, because most of my media is 16x, and it would seem that a 24x burner would be more reliable burning at that speed than a 16x burner. If this is not so, I can't see the reason for the faster burners.

I think that I found the reason that my order disappeared, I found the same drive on Amazon, but now it is $5 more that I ordered for. I bet that they just unilaterally canceled my order, because they didn't want to sell at the price I was offered.

I've just about had it with Amazon, because I have had numerous problems with them, of different sorts. I was already limiting my use of their service because of this, but I think that this is the last straw.

I just received a shipping notice from Amazon, but it contained something that seemed odd to me:

We thought you'd like to know that we shipped your items, and that this
completes your order. Your order is being shipped and cannot be changed
by you or by our customer service department.

I don't recall ever seeing phrasing of this kind before. Why would they make such a statement? If the drive arrives as expected in new condition as advertised, and they only charge the agreed price, there shouldn't be a need to change anything at this point.

EDIT: I'm wrong. I went back through my email archive, and some of their other notifications were worded in this fashion also. I still leaves me wondering why there is no record of it in my account?

I too don't see the reason for these faster and faster burners either since there isn't media to support them. But like anything else, consumers often gobble up the technology without really thinking through what it means.
