Disk check has been canceled on reboot?

To All,

I have been trying to run a disk check in Windows 7 (I have a Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980 with Windows 7 64bit) through a program called tuneup utility program, although in this case I am unsure if it matters.

No matter which option I chose (either fixing bad sectors or not), I am asked to run this on reboot.

When I reboot my laptop, the disk check momentarily begins and then I see "Disk check has been canceled" (or something similar).

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I must do to make it stop?

I read somewhere (I cannot find the link now) that a wireless keyboard may sometimes cause this, but as I have a laptop, I am wondering if it is my wireless mouse?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sincerely,

KC

Hello KC,

Are you able to run Disk Check (chkdsk) normally through Windows 7 without using that program?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

As a test to see if it's your wireless mouse, you can unplug the USB receiver from the laptop for it before restarting the computer to allow chkdsk to run.

Keyboard probably doesn't matter. Have you tried running a chkdsk from within win 7?

Then disconnect the mouse and use the internal touch pad and try again to run disk check. BTW why run a third party software to do a job that is easy to do within Windows 7?

I guess because it was easy to simply run it from the utility program while doing system maintenance.

My guess is I will have the same issues running it directly in Windows 7 but I'll find out this evening.

I will also try disconnecting the mouse.

Thank you for responding! :)

Disk check has been cancelled on reboot?

I have had the same problem on my HP G70250US laptop, however, I have no external keyboards, or etc. Any suggestions? I have tried to run within the program, but it states it needs to be next time it boots. BUT it continues to cancel. Done everything I know how to do.

zigzag3143,

I was unable to get Windows 7 to perform the operation without it advising a reboot and on reboot I had the same failure as before (which is what I was suspecting might happen).

mitchell65,

Then disconnect the mouse and use the internal touch pad and try again to run disk check.

When a scheduled the disk check, I rebooted and removed the usb mouse before windows started but regrettably it did not help.

caring1951,

I believe there are many talented people in these forums.

I am hopeful that a solution might be found.

Is there another program out there thart might overcome this issue?

Can maybe a disk check be run in DOS Command prompt window and if so what would be the root directory to start from (C:\?) and what should be typed to get it to check the entire hard drive and fix any errors?

Brink,

I booted in safe mode with command prompt and typed in the check disk command as you have listed above but received an error stating that it could not run because the disk volume was in use.

I was asked if I wanted to try on the next reboot (y/n) and I of course typed "y".

I might have been a little tired, for I tried it twice, but on each reboot I did not even perceive Windows trying to run check disk as I do when I ask it to do so from within Windows 7 itself.

It is as if tying "y" had no bearing.

I have spoken with Toshiba Tech Support and they are aware of this issue.

They are trying to develop an in-house solution which might be available next month.

I guess I will need to wait.

I thank everyone for their advice.

After reading a good part of the article, I have a question for Brink:
Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista - Vista Forums

I first ran the sfc /scannow command and after it had completed, the message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

I tried running Disk Check through my utilities program and under the normal parameters (i.e. not attempting to repair any files) it completed.

When I tried a more thorough approach, I was asked to reboot but got the same results as before (Disk Check has been canceled).

I have taken full ownership of the autochk.exe file, but as I am in Windows 7 64bit, the version of the file that I have is 6.1.7600.16385

Is there a replacement file for this so that if it is replaced I might get chkdsk to work on reboot?

Please let me know what steps I might have to take in case I missed something.

I know others in the Vista Forum had difficulties in getting to copy a new file over to the right path.

Tank you motc7 for the link and I'll await further instructions.

Sincerely,

KC

PS

There was something from a user stating he had done this:

"I have 3 HP Pavilion 6500 all experiencing the same problem.
The following procedure worked,
I’m just not sure if it’s specific to HP. HP support was no help!

HP Laptop Vista Ultimate 64

Hit F8 once every second right after starting the PC

This gets you into the DOS looking screen with safe mode and other options, select Repair
Recovery manager starts
Select Advanced Options
Select computer checkup
Select command prompt

CMD prompt starts in X:
Enter C: to change to the C drive
Enter chkdsk /f
When asked to force a dismount select Y

Check disk should now start automatically.
Exit then boot "

Is this valid for Windows 7 and does it have to be done each time to chkdsk or once it is done the issue will be solved and on future reboots all will work nicely?

The only problem is that this laptop does not come with any disks at all.

Now, I have already made a Windows 7 64bit System Repair Disk.

Will using that work?

I am so very grateful for this forum.

No, it will not work with that. Here's a copy from my system in the ZIP file below. Double check the file version to make sure that it's the same as yours first though. Hopefully this may help.

Brink,

I am sure I must have done something wrong, but I do not know what.

Referring to this article:
Chkdsk will Not Run at Startup in Vista - Vista Forums

STEP ONE:Safe Mode Workaround
This has not worked for me

STEP TWO:Run a SFC /SCANNOW Command
I ran this and there were no errors found

STEP THREE:Reset chkdsk BootExecute
I have not checked this yet

Edited: This value might already be correct but I have not verifed

STEP FOUR:Replace autochk.exe File
This I did yesterday with your download

STEP FIVE:Set Chkdsk to Run at Startup
I am unable to get it to run the thorough analysis without canceling

Will the missing step 3 possibly cure the ill?

Additionally, what about this advice from another user (I posted earlier on Page 1):

======================================================

Hit F8 once every second right after starting the PC

This gets you into the DOS looking screen with safe mode and other options, select Repair
Recovery manager starts

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

KC
