All USB ports stopped working

Not talking about the devices u plug in but the actual usb controllers themselves: what if u uninstall the usb host controller and the root hub and let windows find them again?

Have tried uninstalling the hub. Windows automatically finds them, and then the problem is exactly as previously.

The only thing I have not seen in this thread is to check you BIOS for an update. You might need to flash the BIOS since this happened during or after upgrading from Vista to 7, the motherboard might have an update. You can use this program:
CPUID
Run CPU-Z to see what your motherboard is. Post here what the motherboard is. Also you can google the Mobo name and the Words BIOS to find the latest BIOS updates usually. If none can be found, and if it is from an OEM like HP or Dell etc, call the manufacturer as they probably have seen this issue already (a lot probably).

Edits:

Caution: Flashing the BIOS is a technical process and if you do this process, please post back here for instructions or walkthrough with doing so. Each type of BIOS has its own process for flashing it.

Downloads - Support - Fujitsu

This is where you should go for drivers. I don't know if they have one for the USB, but they should. an Update for the BIOS might also be in here.Just click on drivers and then select your model.

I would like you to fill in your computer specs so we all know what your system is.

Cheers for the suggestions.

I've updated some of the specs, as you can tell i'm not really sure exactly what i'm looking for and my computer knowledge is patchy at best.

I've run the CPU-Z test, but not sure where the info you are after is. Under CPU or Mainboard?

Under Mainboard/Motherboard I've got the following:
Fujitsu Siemens
Amilo li 1718
Chipset: ATI, RS400/RC400?RC410
Southbridge: ATI SB400

BIOS:
Brand: Phoenix
Version: V1.9
Date: 11.12.2007

Sorry, not trying to appear rude, just bloody frustrated with this stupid problem! I have a nasty feeling that this is going to result in no solution being found, and me moving back from 7 to Vista again. Annoying because everything else with the computer is running better, and because I doubt i'll get a refund from MS.

Tell us exactly what you mean!
Did they stop working after windows connected to internet and installed so-called 'updates'.

What did you install or do between 1st installation and USB not working? What updates/software did you install?

If you have nothing to lose - go back to the first restore point date when you first applied Windows 7 - see if USB returns

Nope, the ports were working for a fair while after i installed windows 7, and i was certainly connected to the internet a lot.

The only software i can think of is microsoft security essentials, but even that was working for a while (can't remember the exact date i installed it, but sure i would have noticed if the ports failed immediately afterward).

I had a look at restoring the system to just after i installed win7, but i couldn't go back far enough - there had already been loads of small windows updates and the restore dates didn't go back far enough. Any thoughts on how i can go back further with the restore?

"The Amilo has very few ports. There's no memory card reader or FireWire port, and no CardBus or ExpressCard expansion slots either. It does have four USB2 ports"
Sound familiar?

Friend with a meter?
Stick a metering tip into the end of a usb lead, see if there is any current coming thru.
(USB = 100 ma + 500 ma versions, with the 100 ma generally being limited to laptops.)

Whip top off laptop and check if there is a loose cable connection (if the USB ports are not soldered to the motherboard.) Can't look it up coz don't know model of motherboard.

Are you plugging a 'known working' USB mouse/item into your laptop??

Reinstall Win 7 from scratch.

Sounds familiar alright, the laptop has practically nothing other than the USB ports!

Don't have a meter available, but think there is current coming thru because when i plug the mouse in, the optical part starts to blink (for around 5 seconds or so) whilst windows determines what it is. Once windows has failed to recognise it, the blinking stops.

I managed to get some details of the motherboard, and posted the info above i think.

Manufacturer: Fujitsu Siemens
Model: Amilo Li 1718
Chipset: ATI, RS400/RC400/RC410
Southbridge: ATI, SB400

Just spent an hour on the phone with MS, who accessed the computer, had a poke around but didn't really try anything new. They also suggested reinstalling the OS. I informed them that i'd bought it over the net, so don't have a disk, and am now expecting a call back from the 'research team' on Monday.

I love Windows 7.

Try pulling electric plug and battery out for couple of mins so there is no power in laptop.

It clears the USB chipset memory.

Try looking here - loads of people have had a USB problem with this laptop motherboard

http://forum.ts.fujitsu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=30298

Look on here for VIA USB Chipset updates for Win 7 - your chipset
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=1&CatID=1200

According to a couple of reviews - you have a quality DVD/CD burner built in. don't know about your exact shop model though! should be able to make win 7 bootable disc

Great stuff!

I should have added to my previous blurrrrb:
"Pull all your USB connections out > then put them back in one by one PC's + Laptops"! (Before cutting off power, pulling lead/battery)
