Nvidia just released their Optimus technology which allows you to do that, I don't believe any computers have it yet though.

Lenovo thinkpads have had a switchable graphics option with both integrated and pci ATI GPUs for at least a year and a half. In vista and xp all that was required to change the active GPU was right clicking on the power manager app from lenovo and selecting discreet or integrated graphics. There hasn't been an update for windows 7 for my laptop yet that compares, so I have to decide at startup which option to choose by changing the graphics settings in bios.

Installing the graphics drivers when I installed 7 was not exactly easy, but I can't see how solving the OPs problem would be any different than the process I used to get both working on my laptop, when the manufacturer hasn't released a windows 7 driver yet.. To get them both working you have to first install the driver for the gpu that's active, then restart, go into the bios settings, change the graphics option, then install the other driver. I could probably solve the OPs problem in less than a half hour in person.. but I'm not so good at trying to write down the process.

I don't see anything related to the graphics option in my bios, can u explain more. Will that solve my gaming issues?

I'm not familiar with the model listed in your specs, but if there are two graphics gpus in your laptop, there should be an option in the system configuration menu of BIOS to choose which one is active by default and both should also be listed in the system information in BIOS. HPs website is disorganized at best so, I haven't had any luck finding a service manual that describes a laptop with two GPUs under the model number you have listed in your specs. What is the model # as listed on the bottom of your laptop.. that number is specific to your build.

As for gaming issues, you won't get better performance in games with the integrated chip.

It's listed as this : Model #: dv5-1135ee
About gaming issues: After running the games for 10-15 mins, the game starts to freeze like every second for a few mins then they may run normally or just crash.

Here is a list of hardware in your laptop according to HP's website.

you don't have the integrated graphics chip. Games freezing up after 10-15 minutes of play sounds more likely to be a heat issue.. your graphics card or CPU overheating. Have you tried cleaning any dust that may have accumulated around the cooling fan intake? A little compressed air in the right place has solved more of this kind of problem than I can count.

If that's not the case, and having tested the memory and other issues, I'd look at the HDD as possibly being defective or starting to wear out. try running a disk check with the option to scan for bad sectors checked.

Here are my temps (after long usage) :
60464892.jpg

So i think it's not the heat causing this issue. I also ran the chkdsk
and didn't repot any problems.
This problem showed up immediately after installing windows 7, i didn't use to have such a problem with vista.

Is that after running the game with the temp monitor on until you get the freeze? Also, I would double check with a different monitoring app, ie CPUID HW monitor just to make sure the app is reading the sensors correctly, while running a benchmark that will stress the system (FurMark is a good freeware app). You can end the freeze by pressing windows+d and closing the game from the system tray with a right click once you get the error. Everything about this screams overheating.

yes I also just had a problem like that,, when pake xp sp3 I still can not play PES 2010 with 256 mb VRAM, but when the seven could be to detect only 64 mb .. GMA 4500 onboard vga MHD

saya coba masuk ke bios tapi tidak ada settingan nya :((

Well i figured out what caused most of my games to freeze, it's the xp mode. Running Silkraod online in xp service pack 3 mode just caused it to be unplayable. However, running Silkraod online normally caused a new issue. When i click, a white blank screen appears for like 0.1 second and the game crashes all of a sudden at any minute just leaving a dialog that disappears so fast that i can't read a word on it. Hope someone can help cause i love gaming.

What this means is that Intel wont let you update the driver! If you uninstall and boot straight to safemode on the reboot and install the downloaded drivers then. Ive got a packard bell and had the exact same issue but did that and worked fine! The trick is to not let the drivers install automatically!!! Dont worry bout the others as one is up to date and the other isnt intel i would assume!

You may want to load safemode with networking to D/L the drivers.

That's something i will do when warranty will be ran off.

Looks for coolbyte the intel driver is missing or uninstalled...or not for his machine.

Hi
I've a Packard Bell laptop as well (easynote ST86 T055) and I guess I've the same problem as you had. I just got a new game and after installing when I start it up, I briefly get a black screen and next I'm back on my desktop. I've got te problem that I can't update my graphics driver neither. Because I'm not good with computers I would like to ask if it's possible to give me step by step what I should do because I'm scared to mess up my computer... (one thing don't know if it matters but i'm running vista but ended up here i'm search for answers)

thx

Sorry for the late answer...

Well, very hard to get the switchable graphics up to date without the manufacturer update. The main reason is that the manufacturer customize the drivers for the both graphics cards and you will loose the ability to manualy switch the graphics right clicked on desktop and the ability to let the system do it itself.

That's mean it is possible, but be aware of this, it is one or the other...
In consequences it will not provide the Power Management for those laptops and don't be surprised if your battery runs out faster than usual. As another way, manage your power setting yourself.

BIOS is locked for most of the time on laptops and you will have only the option of "discrete" or "switchable".
For this, you will have to grab somewhere a modified Bios (modded bios) of the actual version installed on your machine to unlock those features, if you want the system to boot as for exemple only on the "Ati Card" or only on the "Intel Card".

I know some would prefer their Ati Card and some would for Intel GMA for their proper way using it.

I'm just learned that my Intel graphics chipset was linked to my motherboard chipset and therefore be aware to update aswell. Looks recommended, it's easy to mess up the all thing without noticed it. That's mean when i'm updating my Ati card (from manufacturer drivers), it looks after the motherboard chipset, if the driver is up to date and writes the files that way.

In conclusion, everything is possible but not without having choosing and being aware of the consequences. I would not recommend a bootable modded bios to someone in anyways as an easy thing to do.

So sorry to sort of hijack this thread after so long but i'm facing a dilemma and i didn't want to create another thread for what might be a dumb question. I currently have a new Compaq Presario CQ35 214tx laptop and i'm installing the drivers for it after a new installation of win 7 (x64).

At the HP website, under the listed graphics drivers for my computer, they show both the nvidia one and the 'mobile intel 4 series express chipset family' driver. My question is 'do i install both or just the nvidia one since under my specifications i apparently have a 512mb dedicated Nvidia Geforce 105m GPU?' Would installing both cause any potential problems?

Sorry for the noob question and thanks in advance!

If they do listed both it is because you might have a Switchable Graphics Card NviDia + Intel GMA.

That's mean when you're wired powered your using the NviDia Card and when you are on battery powered it using the Intel GMA.

Normally, you should only update the NviDia Card because those are customized Drivers by Mfg, including the Intel Drivers inside the package.

Now, as you can see on HP Site:

The Intel drivers are Version:8.15.10.1883. 25. A 32Mb
And the NviDia Drivers are Version:8.15.11.8644. A 176,64Mb (more up to date)

Go on the Nvidia Geforce G105M Graphics Driver and this will update aswell (partially) the Intel GMA.

:)
