I'm thinking of just deep 6'ing Windows 7

This is unacceptable.

I have gone through 2 separate Wireless cards that advertise Windows 7 x64 compatibility.

After perusing several lengthy threads I tried to mitigate the problem with common advice provided here. I have updated the drivers on both. I have updated the firmware on my router to accomodate Windows 7 x64.

I cannot achieve anywhere near 50% of the advertised Mbps of my ISP. As of 30 seconds ago I tested @ 1.18 down on a 6 Mbps connection.

There's a cheap Windows xp netbook in another room further away from the router/modem that runs @ 5.8-5.9Mbps

I can place an old Macbook on the desk literally right above my desktop and achieve 5.9Mbps.

Needless to say every other Mac in my house is running @ the proper speeds.

This is wholly unacceptable. I was excited to get Windows 7 up and running, but I had no clue that Redmond hadn't gotten their networking situated any better. Is it so convoluted that Wireless adapter manufacturers are clueless? They're advertising compatibility but the delivery is unacceptable.

The adapters I'm using are:

Linksys intially, and now Gigabyte GN-WP01GS.

Fill out your system specs and we'll look at what might be the cause.
Edit: system specs might not be necessary for this, but I still recommend it.

First off, try following these suggestions and see if it helps.
http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/58293-win-7-very-slow-internet.html

In above suggestion, it could be the IPv6.
IPv6 Considered a Problem by Some Users
IPv6 (IPng) vs. IPv4 | NetworkDictionary

Third might be the driver, maybe going to an older one will solve the problem. If you are getting the drivers from MS through auto-update, sometimes these are not the best.

I've downloaded Gigabyte's latest driver in the last ~week

I looked to see if downloading and installing it again might change anything, but the networking is so incredibly slow that it would take about 1.25 hrs.

If you guys can't solve it I'm done with Windows 7. I'll install xp and/or give this machine away. I'm not having any fun trying to sift through pages and pages of possible fixes for something that should work much better with much less effort.

I honestly believed that I could build a machine with compatible hardware, install windows, install the latest drivers, and maybe it would be a positive experience.

Building the machine was fun
getting it up and running was fun
when the networking was doing well with Vista x86 I was using this machine as often as I could

since installing 7 it's been a networking disaster, and I'm not buying another adapter just to go through the same nonsense

Kind of hard to have your problem solved in under an hour... give the guys some time. :)

Question... can you hardwire into the router? If so, what are the speeds then? If you have one of the latest motherboards, I am sure it has on-board LAN connection. If you do this test, make sure to disconnect and pull out the wireless card.

I am personally using a 2 year old Linksys wireless card I had laying around (not even Win 7 "certified") and it runs perfectly.

I don't know guys. It has been a week, and I'm just not interested in fighting over it anymore.

D-Link says it's the wireless card's fault. They can point to 5 other machines in the house running at the proper speed as their evidence.

Gigabyte says it's the routers fault because the card might not work well with D-Link routers.

Linksys says the same thing.

If the machine takes half an hour to download lecture notes to take to class it's just a $1500 doorstop minus the monitor. I can probably fetch a decent amount for the 2407wfp on ebay and just pass this box off to someone that strictly hardwires their machines.

Apple's getting a call in the AM. I'll dual boot xp.

I'm done with 7.

Updating hardware is standard procedure when moving up to a new Op system. I suggest you try upgrading the wireless adaptor to one of the newer D-link versions. This can also be a router problem despite having the firmware updated there can still be problems because the network stack has been changed considerably with Win 7. Or you can just stick to your complain and blame topic if you wish.

It really looks like this adapter, Gigabyte GN-WP01GS is a crap card when it comes to connection speeds and 64-bit support.

While I can understand your frustrations, it seems like returning this card for something that doesn't seem to have notoriously bad reviews and speed issues might be a better fix.

Ummmm... this might be a silly question but... You're on wireless ... ya?
Are there any other machines connecting to that hub in your house?

Wireless hubs have a nasty limitation... the 54mbps (or so) max speed is actually shared by eveyone connected. 2 machines == 26mbps each 4 machines == 13 etc.

Same with your internet connection... 1 machine == 6mbps, 2 machines == 3 each, 4 machines == 1.5, etc.

(When all machines are active, of course.)

So how much stuff do you actually have going on there?
Like is your sister downloading Avatar or something?

D-Link is correct. Apple does not use D-Link in it's cards, and yet they are compatible. If the components are made to spec it should not matter where you get your components from as long as it says IEEE 802.11 somewhere.

Unfortunately none of this advice is resulting in a bump in speed.

I'm willing to attempt 1 more wireless card before I dump the machine + OS and just grab a Mac Pro or iMac.

What wireless card should I purchase to operate with a D-Link DIR-615 router?

I'm not about to change routers, as this router provides 5 computers that will simultaneously achieve 5.9 Mbps down on a 6 Mbps connection. The only machine not achieving proper speeds is quite probably the nicest machine in the house.

Suggest an adapter sevenforums. This is obviously the right place to ask, and I'm not interested in browsing 80 different threads discussing adapters. I want advice directly from someone utilizing a wireless card @ proper capacity.

I've become entirely too frustrated looking at this beautiful machine i've built operating in internet limp-mode. It pulls at my soul in all the wrong ways.

please would be nice....

to answer your question, im using a belkin FD8053UK v3 on a Dlink 2640R router and i get the full 6 meg of my connection.... but i would only recommend it if your willing to take the time to play with the drivers, the default ones dont work on 7 X64 but there is a workaround

i always think the best way to go, is use the same manufacturor as your router, that saves messing around with companies blaming each other, so go Dlink
