Hi,

I am having an issue where Java applets do not run. I've gone searching the web via google and bing looking for solution and most of them came to this site. I've tried all solutions presented, but none have worked.

I've gone to Sun's website, and Mozilla website for support and have also tried all their suggestion. (Sun's seems very outdated)

With all my searching I've found several people have the same issue so I would think Sun and/or Mozilla would have a special topic on it.

Things I've tried and can be ruled out:

My account is an administrator account.

  1. Re-install Firefox 3.6.3.
  2. Re-install Java 1.6u20.
  3. Cleared out all entries of Java Applet Plugin from Firefox plug-in manager. (There were none.)
  4. Attempted to "turn on" Java in Firefox, but the option was not available.
  5. Went into Java Console in the Control Panel, went to "Advanced" -> "Default Java for Browsers" and found only "Internet Explorer" check off and greyed out. I enabled Mozilla Family, and hit "Apply" then "Ok". This did not work, going back into the Java Console in the Control Panel revealed that "Mozilla Family" was again unchecked. So I tried this several more times.
  6. There was a suggestion to -turn off- "Advanced" -> Java plug-in in the Control Panel as well, but my option is checked and greyed out.
  7. I had the same issue as #5 on another software, and I tried running that other software with "Run as administrator" and checked all the options and hit apply/Ok and this time the options stayed. Learning this, I tried all sorts of combinations of "Running as administrator" for the Java Control Panel and had no success.
  8. One suggestion was to copy certain .DLL's from the Java/bin directory directly to the Firefox plug-in directory. However, I did not have all the .DLL's they suggested, but their suggestion was for an older version of Java so I tried what I thought would be the equivelant with no success.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything else I tried.

Thanks for any help you can provide in advance!

I suggest your use a program like Revo Uninstaller to completely wipe all traces of Java & Firefox from your system. This is a bit dangerous but neccessary. It should include registry entries as well. Install both at the highest uninstall method. Be sure to make a system restore/backup point before hand.

Look into Firefox's add-on repository website, there's a separate download for Java platform.

Also didn't work...

Thanks notsograymatter, I've used Revo in the past and love the program, hadn't used it lately cause you have to buy the Pro version for x64, however I downloaded it and was able to use the promotional period to do as you suggest.

I should say that it worked beautifully for the Java JRE and Firefox uninstalls, but for some reason it would only run the installer for the Java JDK. No matter, I used Windows' remove programs for that. After doing these three things, I went to the respective directories to make sure all files were gone, they were. For extra checking, I used CCleaner to scan the registry, found a couple remnants (from the Windows' uninstall) but otherwise it was clean.

I then installed Firefox followed by Java: Didn't work. So I repeated the above and tried installing Java followed by Firefox. Also didn't work.

Grrr, this is quite fustrating.

Any other ideas?

P.S. I'm about to try zzz2496's idea, however I did do a preliminary search and only found third party plug-ins/addons that related. I'm a bit hesitant to do this as these two softwares should get along just fine without a chaperon. (Doing a more extensive search now.)

Thanks zzz2496,

Did a more extensive search including a simple search on just the word "Java", 88 results were returned and I read through each one. None of them would help me with my issue, most were for just adding a button to view the console or for searching for Java code at a particular site.

Thanks again

Thanks but the following quote from that page is a bit telling:

"NOTE: This add-on and its associated JRE is no longer supported by Sun. Do not install this add-on.

The Java Console enables you to monitor status and debug running applets and Java Webstart application that use Sun Java technology.

This add-on requires JRE 1.6.0_02 installation to work. Visit http://java.com to download JRE 1.6.0_02."

I am using JRE 1.6.0_20 (the latest anyway) and my problem isn't for seeing the console, but actually running the applet.

Thanks for the tries.

Any other ideas?

Urgh... that didn't work, huh...

You can try this: Uninstall java (again). Then start Firefox in "Profile" mode. Delete the default profile (I hope you've backed up your bookmarks, saved passwords, etc), create a new profile, Exit Firefox. Now install Java. See if it helps.

zzz2496

Ps: Once uninstalled, check "Program Files" for "java" folder. Oh, btw you need to install both 32bit and 64bit if you're on a 64bit OS. I learn that the hard way...

WOW, its working!

I decided to try your PS first, and sure enough it worked. (Btw, I still had Java 64bit uninstalled, so now only 32bit is installed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My doctor thanks you too with all the stress I've been through over this.

(So, did Sun test its 64bit release? Makes you wonder.)

There is a helpful notes from the Sun:
Which version of Java should I download for my Windows 64-bit operating system?

Most important part from this notes:
Windows 64-bit operating system comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit Internet Explorer (IE) browsers. 32-bit IE comes as a default. There are different versions of Java software available for download depending on whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit IE browsers.

Thanks for the info

Maybe this applies to Firefox as well, I'll keep a note of it.

Thanks for your time!
