Event ID 22 can occur if the data is locked by being open in another application. To test that boot into safe mode F8, and see if it completes there.

Hi,

try checking if your deafult VSS Software provider is installed properly or not. We can use command
vssdsmin list providers
This sould enlist the "Microsoft Software Prvioder".

Also, check for this service, "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider".

Providers is the actual piece that takes a snapshot, this is a DCOM component. You can search for this in "Component Services", look for VssSampleProvider. If this provider is not getting enlisted means this piece is missing from VSS framework, beacause of which your snapshot has to fail.

You can try re-installling VSS. Till the time provider is not installed properly, you wont be able to take a snapshot.

where can I get the VSS framework download?

I also installed shadow explorer ShadowExplorer.com - Downloads
tried some other dos command too.
see my registry? it's missing sys restore but all the points are available

I give up.

I'll just keep cloning my drive every few days instead of every 5-8weeks

Have you looked into re-registering the VSS files? The following work-around is for W2K3, but you can try this for your machine. Lets see if this works !

Various issues may occur on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service


Also, you can download the VSS SDK from Microsoft's site and check out the command-line utility that comes with this for VSS, called vshadow.

Using VSS is any time better than cloning your drive. Hope this helps you !
