My question right now is.. will I still be ables use this laptop.. when I have to disconnect the modem from the desktop..to take the tower out of town to get this repaired ?..at the present.. I've had both connected by way of a router.. modem..was working perfetly until I caused this mess.
I don't want to destroy anything else.. I'll await your reply.

If this isn't where it should be.. plz feel free to move it to the correct board.

Thanks so very much.. for any help on this .
LPt

ps.. I have notes on what I have tried so far.. none of it worked.

Your notebook will still work with tower unpluged from router.

What repairs have you tried?

Hello.. thanks for your reply.
Here is what has been tried:
I called my DSL.. sbcglobal.. then got an upper Tech guy.(.pay for this only /service)
We tried to get the pc to boot up..making a few clicks.. no go.
Next.. he had me to turn it off and on.. tapping the F8 key repeatedly.. no go..
Next.. more stating and stopping..finally he decided to try the boot mode..
when the black screen appeared.. he had me to use the up and down keys to get to the middle line ( of 3 choices).. had me type in a few key strokes..hit enter...Next.. a page of things related to Windows appeared filling my screen.. Then nothing else..
Next ..same thing.. back to the black screen..this time we tried the botton line.. hit enter..nothing happened...
He said " your going to have to take the tower to your tech guy.. have him back it up.. on Cd's.. to let you have.. then call us back we'll walk you through the installing.
That's it... for this service he wants $114. dollars.. on my credit card..
He isn't getting that kind of money for that bit of work !!!.. I'll call my credit card and ask the to put a hold on those charges.. !!! till furter notice.
Thank you so very much for your help.

Many thanks. I was confused.

So we have an XP SP3 desktop which does not function correctly.

Understandably, she is in a little bit of a panic-I would be too.

Now, forgetting all of the router stuff and disconnected from the internet--What is the problem?

I'm trying to understand the problem.

LPT... I would download a copy of Ubuntu, burn as an image file and boot from the cd.... Choose the "Try Ubuntu without making any changes to my pc" ... this will load ubuntu without actually installing it... You will then be able to backup your files to cd's, then proceed with a reinstall of Windows XP... be sure to download the necessary drivers and burn them to a cd as well... Let us know if you need help... Good Luck!

Twes.. hello..
I can go download the program you have mentioned ....
keep in mind.. I'm having to use my Windows 7 to comminicate with you.
I have my drivers on a RED CD that came with my Windows XP.. will that work for the drivers needed ?

Thank you for your help.

Yes! You have half the battle won ... continue with the download of ubuntu and backup the files that you need... Remember that you will need to reinstall all of your programs when you are finished, but your problem will be fixed... you are almost there!!

Twes where do I download this program to....that you want me to use for this ?.. since the desktop pc isn't working.
