Is the Tag Editor gone in WMP 12

Hi folks,

in WMP 11 there was a tag editor. I used it quite often. I can't find it in WMP 12 anymore. Is it hidden or completley gone?

Yeah, this is really annoying. I miss WMP11's Tag Editor. The only way I've been able to change tag information is to "Choose Column" and add the tag columns that I want to change. Then I edit the values in the list.

I also use mp3tag. Its a nice small programm. Better than nothing.
It has some cool features like convert filename to tag...

I've had some of my "test" MP3 files moved over to WMP12 and Windows 7 only to discover that the ID3 tag information doesn't show up in either. Haven't figured out the cause of this behavior yet either and it's driving me nuts. The tag information was there and showed up when PLAYING the files but not in the LIBRARY or EXPLORER views.

If you look at the files in EXPLORER, there is a tag editor down at the bottom - true, not nearly as complete as WMP11's Advanced Tag Editor function but there nonetheless. Also if you select the MP3 file and choose PROPERTIES, there is a rather extensive ability to edit the tag information, in fact I'm thinking WAY TOO MUCH ability and clearly designed to encompass all types of files. The only thing I could not find to edit was the album cover and of course MP3Tag does that nicely.

BTW, if your MP3 files show up in EXPLORER without any tag information showing and you know there should be some, then you've encountered the problem I was talking about earlier. I was able to fix the ID3 fields by using MP3Tag editor and 1-delete previous information then 2-extend tags. The result is to lose the old information (and the bug that keeps them from being seen!). After extending the tags I was able to reenter all the information using EXPLORER or MP3Tag editior. The bug was not in all of my MP3 files either, only some. I may have narrowed the bug down to files I created with Exact Audio Copy which I used to create the tags with in the first place - not a definite source yet though.

I myself use a program that I am partial too, and have used for a number of years - ID3-tagit - last updated in '03 but it still works - like a champ.

It's a great app for the job esp. if you have hundreds of albums like I do.

Well, WMP and Explorer do not support mp3s with encrypted ID3 Tags. I think they don't even play them...

I thought this was intuitive -- it was for me at least. Switch to expanded tile or detail mode, right click the data in the column you want to edit and select, well, EDIT

To edit, say, all the parental tags on your Kid Rock songs so the kids don't find them during a search and play them, select the Artist view under Music and type "Kid Rock" in the search box. Double click the result. Ctrl+A to select all, right click the Parental Rating column, type "NAUGHTY!" and press <enter>. All your Kid Rock music is now tagged as such.

are you giving me the steps to a 3rd party app? or something MS? If so, cant do any of what you just mentioned in 7000, in any mode, detail etc, cant right click the parental column and edit either, no edit option even available, even if alt/edit, nothing in the menu there either. Cant rate a file either, manually. I think its avail thru winamp, but couldnt even find it thru WMP. There isnt any option to edit the details info properties. My brain may be thick as a milkshake right now, but i just cant wrap around this. or come to any explanation/reason why this is so difficult, when it seems simple as pie to be able to do.

but will this not be filtered by 7 thru WMP or MC? Naughty? How about a rating, like the game or movie system uses, currently this can only be done (that i know of) is with the playback of a retail dvd or by watching tv thru MC/WMP. If the movie or songs are R rated or explicit lyrics then i want those filtered from the kids. Instead of either hiding the dir itself, and while still being IN the chosen linked library, and avail to users with explicit/ratings permission, just like for the games per say. Not a homebrew thing i am looking for, just wanting to know how to use what looks to be used there in the info tag props

Don't share your music folder, share your library. Create whatever rating system you wish and then use this dialog:



And you've got that pane in 7000 -- go to your music library and view some songs and drag that pane bigger

Also, i've just tried and you can change multiple files at once (within WMP12). Select the files you want (normally click 1st track then shift-click the last track), then right click the first track (under Parental Rating) and type what you want. It will type in the 1 box but once you press enter it'll change all selected tracks to that same tag.

Still tho, where did you get that dialogue box in the figure shot (stream)... now this i dont think i have on 7000, think it (stream) came into play with 22 or 48 cant recall. I dont just share my music folder, i share the music library with adding other "music" folders to the music library.

Yeah, now that I think of it, they changed sharing to streaming sometime back. The idea is that your library, no matter what folders are in it, is added to the WMP library and Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (wmpnetwk.exe) makes it available over the network to WMP instances either on the same machine or over the homegroup, even when you're logged out.

right. I have an extender on the network. This is the main reason why i started to want this more and more, besides just with lan pc's.

And as long as the folders are indexed as well....? right? if not then they wont show in the homegroup folder library as well as the WMP or MC if they are not indexed?

If the media is in your library it will get indexed by default. If you see it in WMP then it's available to be shared depending on restrictions you set.

You can restrict by user and PC.

Users won't even be shown content they have no access to.
