When copying files in Windows 7, the box that shows the copying process has the "more details" button that shows more information. I really like to look at that info and would really like to not have to click the "more details" button for each copying process. Is there a way to tweak the registry to make the default show the more detail view instead of the less details view?

You must do an awful lot of copying of awfully big files because most of what I do goes so fast that you don't even get to see the dialog! And when it does take a little longer I've usually got better things to do than sit and stare at it especially as all it tells me most of the time is that it's still "calculating".

I doubt that this is possible through the registry (though I will have a delve around if I get the time) which probably means it's not possible period. I guess you'd have to use a third party utility to do your file management if you were that determined.

I wasn't really interested in getting into the "merits" of either seeing details or not as every user is different. I just wanted to know if it could be done.

Well unfortunately the merits are part of the equation. Everything can be done. It would be relatively simple to set up a hook to intercept the creation of the dialog and press the button for you, for example, but is it actually worth the coding effort and having a program constantly running just for this purpose especially if it's only once in a blue moon requirement? Alternatively it may be possible to locate and rework the dialog so that it always shows all details but again that's gonna take time and effort from someone which almost certainly could be better spent.

It may seem like a trivial matter to you but if MS didn't think it worth the effort to make this an option you've got to assume that it will not be a trivial matter to undo all the knots and retie them according to your own peccadillos!

So the answer is 'yes, it can be done' but the point is that it cannot be done easily so 'how much does it matter to you?' is really the only question that ... er ... matters if you want someone to find a way for you.

Dude from your rather winded response, it's apparent you have way too much time on your hands. I asked a very simple question. I didn't want or ask for your philosophy that had nothing to do with the question. Do me a favor. If I post anymore questions, please do not make anymore attempts to answer them. I can do without your comments. Thanks

Probably because of your responses. Please go to some other thread where possibly someone can use your infinite wisdom. Maybe with you gone, someone will actually offer something tangible.

Dont worry Mike, there are a few developers on this forum, Im sure one of them will be up to the challenge.

I wish I knew how to solve this one, but I am not familiar with the key that would be used. Someone here probably knows though.

I'd love to know if there is a way to set the 'more details' view as default. I'm always moving files around on my computer and around my home network to different devices. Seeing the full file path and data transfer rate is very helpful info when you have multiple copy operations going on simultaneously to different locations.

I tried to do this few months ago, but didn't get a good enough result. The problem is that the progress box doesn't use the standard function TaskDialogIndirect. If it did, it would be simply a matter of flipping one bit.

The closest I got was to simulate a click on the "More" button when the box shows up. This however causes a nasty flicker if it is done too soon. If I delay the "click" by 1 second it works fine. But by then most copy operations are done. There are also some other technical problems, but I believe they are solvable. I decided to not pursue this further since it is just a partial solution at best.

Is anybody interested in this partial solution? Basically you'll get your progress box, and a second later it will expand to view the details as if you clicked on the "More" button yourself.

I could accept the one second delay. Takes about a second to move the mouse to click the "more" box anyway. What are the "other technical problems" you speak of?

I am in complete agreement with you, Mike 89. dunfiddlin's responses are out of line, arrogant and unhelpful. I just started using Windows 7, and, while happy with it for the most part, the first item on my "wish it could be different" list is the issue you raised in this thread.

Seriously?

Then use one of the alternatives that I offered whilst I was being out of line, arrogant and unhelpful by telling you that there was no good way to do this within W7 (later confirmed by others)! Sheesh!

Perhaps it's being old enough to remember when computers were the size of your lounge, cost the same as a small house, were programmed with punch cards and almost always couldn't do what you wanted them to do let alone make it pretty but if I ever get so damned ungrateful that I consider a mouse click to be a major inconvenience you have my full permission to shoot me!

[Exits left, shaking head and mumbling stuff like "they don't know they're born"!]

I too copy a lot of large chunks around from a network and various external hdd's, I usually click 'more' details to ascertain how long I can walk away to live in the real world before I return to my digital world. The semantics of "why would I want to code this' is arbitrary, either you are into it or you arent, if not go do something else.. ie; "dunfiddlin" - there is something wrong with that guy - Microsofts "scripting guy" codes all kinds of useless crap for entertainment..

There is a new Classic Shell beta that solves this problem: http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/95050-classic-shell-looking-testers.html
It will automatically click the button to show more details. If you use Classic theme, the details will show immediately. If you use Basic, you will see the animation of the prograss window expanding. And if you use Aero, there will be extra 500ms delay (adjustable) to avoid flickering.
Send me an email if you want to try it out.
