Before this turns into everyone spouting off their favorite AV, see this thread: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/72070-whats-best-anti-virus.html

I will say that Avira causes BSODs from time to time, but other than that, I recommend that you try them out. Note their speed and how lightweight they are.

As for detection rates, people will argue til the cows come home, but in my opinion, it's all the same. Different AVs will pick up different viruses.

both have trial versions available, give them a go (NOT at the same time.... that will cause all sorts of issues, uninstall one before you try the other) and see which you prefer. Honestly thats the only way to decide.... everyone has their own opinion.

there are quite literally hundreds of threads on here with people just spouting their favourite AV, it doesn't help anyone. So make up your own mind :)

BSODs- Blue Screens of Death. Informal (but highly popular) term for a stop error, which is a critical error that brings the entire system down in a crash.

Comodo is the highest rated firewall. Do note, it is not an anti-virus or anti-malware.

For an anti-virus, I suggest Avast or MSE.

Avira on wife's laptop
Trend Micro on work laptop
MSE on my desktop at home.

Haven't had any problems with any of them.

There are numerous AV solutions available and, like many other users on the Forums, I use Avast! (Free Edition). Just make sure that you download from the manufacturer's website, and don't try to run more than one AV at the same time.

As regards which is better, remember that all AVs are just as good as their latest database update and that no AV can catch 100%. It is therefore essential that you keep your AV up to date (this should be automatic). I can only speak from my experience with Avast!, and I can honestly say that I have had no problems with it.

Anti-viruses these days are much the same. Each program is a little different, but it all depends on your tastes.

MSE is awfully lightweight.

That's all I have much experience with. I recommend trying them all and see which one you like best.

HO, HO! Dude, do exactly what you feel like. Try them out one by one. Learn by experience, there is no standard text that tells you what the best AV is.

BUT, make sure you have your data backed up, so in case you need to format after a bad infection, you dont loose anything critical.

Does Comodo suit you? If you want to use it effectively, it will pop for everything and you have to decide for yourself to allow or deny something.

Seeing as this thread is about anti-virus: The anti-virus component of Comodo is known to be awful.

Comodo also has a free Antivirus-program, when you install, you can select only the firewall or both firewall and antivirus-program.
