Is there any program to disable Zip/Compressed folders?

Is there a program to disable this annoying feature yet? It makes file management irritating. I have tried and failed to edit it manually. I managed to do it once then had to reinstall, I don't want to bother trying again and I don't want to have to do this frustrating chore every time I re-install windows.

Does anybody know of one?

It can only be achieved by changing the registry setting so what's a "program" going to gain you. I dare say it's included in one of the many tweaking apps that are available for Windows 7 but all it does is merge a registry file which you can just as easily create yourself (yes, using the tutorial which you can't be bothered with!)

When using a file manager, windows explorer or whatever else, I only want to see the actual folders in the folder tree. The zip files, hundreds of them in some instances, make a folder tree unnecessarily huge and cluttered. I do not need to or want to browse through zip/cab files like that.

You can edit the registry manually to do it, though the last two times I did it I failed while a 3rd I actually managed it.

I don't know or care what I did wrong the other two times. It's an unwanted feature I'd like to turn off without having to use regedit(or any other manual registry editor).

Any ideas? Last time I looked at a windows tweaker it had nothing related to it.

Every time, yes. How many is unknown but with several computers running w7 to work with it happens plenty often.

Any reason why you don't keep all your hundreds of zip files in a folder of their own ?

You don't need to open that folder unless you want to access a zip file.

Or indeed move them to a backup device or even delete them. If you don't want to see them I've gotta wonder why you keep them at all!

Ok I think understand now. The registry is the only way to do this that I'm aware of.
However, if you make the change in the registry way on one more occasion, you can make this process faster in the future. You do this by doing the change at least once more manually and then exporting the registry key with the change (right click on the key and choose export). In the future you would just double click on the exported key and you wouldn't need to go back into the registry again. Does this help?

Tim stitt solved it
I would open notepad write the key with the correct value save it and then change the extension to .reg
I think and then whenever wherever you click that key and it merges and ta-da
but you must manually write /export the key once

there is a program that allows you to control yer system like win nc/2k style that will help you
but I don't know how to use it but theses kind of settings could be accomplished in earlier windows
versions right so try this >>>>>WinNc 4.8 - a Norton Commander Clone
