Because of the pipe they used in the first place (against better judgment) they may not be able to cap the well?

Apparently there's also a lot of sand that's coming up which is eroding the pipe day by day, and if they don't cap the well before the pipe fails completely (it's already got multiple cracks in it) then there will be an unobstructed hole exposing billions of gallons of crude... and methane...

If that happens, I understand it will leak at least 150,000 barrels or more, per day, for the next 45 years. That might have consequences?

Hmmm... interesting theory. He could be right, but then he couldn't. Who knows?
Anyway, even without this ultimate catastrophe we'll notice the effect. As far as I know, much of the oxygen in the atmosphere is generated by the plankton in the sea. I'm quite sure that it doesn't react too well to all those masses of oil. The future is going to be interesting. I guess we should all start praying.

Well, I don't think that's a smart choice.

Regarding the spill.. I just don't think they are going to be able to stop this thing.
Even if they were to stop the leak today, how many hundreds of years would it take to safely fish the region again? There are so many people's only form of income totally wiped away.

From an environmental standpoint, this is going to have effects far beyond what anybody can possibly imagine. It's really sad.

It only took the human race a little over a hundred years to environmentally destroy this planet. If we don't learn and react to this, I'm affraid we never will.

What happens if BP decides to file for bankruptcy? And that is a very real possibility. Four months into this ordeal and they are starting to liquidate their most valuable assets.
