BSOD while using Beyond Compare over FTP

I have a hunch this may be related to my laziness about rebooting Windows on a regular basis, especially after AV updates.

I have Avast Free, and a week or more ago I think it updated itself, but I had about 20+ windows open, as usual, and didn't want to be bothered to close up all of the things I was in the middle of and reboot just then.

More recently, I was trying to rip a friend's DVD and was trying out a bunch of software, and installed Nero SpeedDisk, but it also required a reboot, which I didn't do, but instead tried something else that didn't require a reboot. The DVD has CRC errors, so I don't think we're going to get that VOB file anyway, we have another copy on order...

Today, I was trying to back up my husband's Android phone over FTP so I could delete some stuff from it, because he got it so full that regular file transfer over the USB cable didn't work (there wasn't even the option to change the USB connection from charging mode to file transfer mode). I was using Beyond Compare (I think version 4, but could have been version 3), and the PC just froze about 2/3 of the way through. I left it alone for a while, hoping Windows would sort itself out, but it didn't. Not responding to ctrl-alt-delete or anything. So I just powered it down, then tried to power it up.


I normally keep the laptop docked, and it had two Passport drives connected directly to the laptop (I alternate backups between the two drives on a regular basis, and they don't work when connected to the docking station), as well as the DVD drive with the disk I was trying to rip a couple of days ago. It was taking forever to reboot, and I wasn't sure if it even was rebooting, because normally nothing shows up on the two external monitors until the Windows screen, and the laptop was closed. So I tried powering off and on a couple of times, then finally just left the laptop open so I could see what was going on.

I got an error message about a boot agent, a MAC address, and not finding a boot file, and I panicked - why was my laptop trying to boot up over a network? So I disconnected everything and took the laptop out of the docking station. I rebooted and chose the SSD to boot from, and got the Windows prompt. Rebooted again and got an error again about the boot agent and a media test failure, to check for a cable not connected.

Left that alone and started searching on the phone, and it looked like the most likely immediate scenario was that my boot order had somehow gotten changed. So I booted into setup, and sure enough, HDD was before SSD in the boot order, and I still had photos on my phone from the last time I was looking through my BIOS settings. It's supposed to be SSD first. So, I'm not sure how that got changed, unless the AV update wanted to boot from HDD as part of the installation process.

Anyway, I fixed that, rebooted, and now I boot up fine and I'm posting from my laptop, in the docking station. And on bootup, there was a notice of a blue screen error. Code 1000007e. I didn't get as far as finding the specific other codes in the message, but came across this site and I've run the log capturing app, so I'll upload the output from that next.

Also of note, around 6 months ago, I added more RAM to the laptop, and I have had a couple of blue screens since then, but I've run MemTest before and never found anything wrong with the RAM. I don't remember how long I ran it, though. In the past, it seemed to be related to undocking the laptop with the Passport drives not properly ejected.

Uninstall Avast and replace it with MSE
