How can I adapt the Epson 1650 scanner, Win 32-bit driver so it will work on my Win 7-64 bit computer.
I had a 64-bit drive in Vista, but when I upgraded my Home Premium from vista to Win 7, the driver was removed in the process.
I cannot use the scanner now. Help please.

No 64-bit driver

Epson does not offer a 64-bit driver for Epson 1560 scanner.

Sorry please forgive my ignorance, but if I am reading the quoted part correctly, you had it working on 64 bit Vista? How did you manage this without a 64 bit driver?

32bit drivers will work in the meaning that they will make the hardware function in some cases. Usually, the hardware will not work quite right or the driver will cause repeated BSODs.

Edit: just to clarify, people should never intentional use a 32bit driver with a 64bit OS. Even it makes your device function (which it might not), you will have a lot worse problems than you had before.

Well if the 32 bit driver worked on 64 bit Vista, I see no reason why it shouldnt also work on 64 bit Win 7. Its certainly worth a go.

I googled and found a web site Planet 64 and someone had adapted the 32 bit driver to work on the Vista 64 bit. So I know it is possible to re-program it, but I do not know how to reprogram the driver. I know I spend $40, but was hoping to do it for free.

Let me clarify, I was not talking about the scanner specifically, but 32bit drivers in general. No clue what might happen. Use the VueScan software first.

@OP I apologise for taking this off topic, I allowed myself to be sucked in to the.. misinformed posting of my colleague. 32 bit drivers wont work on 64 bit windows ever.

If you cant get the Vuescanner software that Pete suggested working, then I would suggest either buy a new scanner, or install 32 bit Windows, your license is valid for both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows as long as its the same "level" (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate etc.) Anyone offering to "convert" it for you for $40 is trying to scam money out of you, DONT FALL FOR IT!

@Petey I don't know what your on about.... 64 bit OS's need a 64 bit driver, ALWAYS!

Direct from Microsoft:
All hardware devices need 64-bit drivers to work on a 64-bit version of Windows. Drivers designed for 32-bit versions of Windows won't work on computers running 64-bit versions of Windows.

I got my memory card reader to function perfectly fine with the 32bit driver, but I had a BSOD problem and a base system device in DM. I looked around and found out that what I downloaded from Dell only contained the 32 bit driver, not the 64 bit one (Dell claimed it had both). I ended up getting the right driver from HP. A lot of people were dealing with the exact same problem. They had the card reader working, but with the wrong driver and once in a blue moon, got a BSOD. So once again, they can make the hardware function from time to time but always cause system instability either way.

EDIT: I must admit to not reading your entire post. MS keeps the FAQ simple. They know that the drivers might not work at all and will ALWAYS cause system instability (they made the OS after all). They could explain in eight paragraphs why sometimes the hardware will function and sometimes it won't and why it will make the whole thing unstable (i.e. BSOD) or they can just say "it won't work, don't do it, that would just be stupid."

EDIT2: to further clarify I was not suggesting he use the 32 bit driver, just offering an explanation of why he might have gotten the scanner to work before.
