Win7 RC1 - How long should an upgrade take?

Did you say you had a RAID? If not, it's gotta be either the 8GBs of RAM or the graphics card perhaps? I can't see anything else that it could be

nope no raid, simple SATA drives.

you havent mentioned what sound card you have by the way.

but so far yeah, it seems its either the 8Gb of ram or the ATI 3870 Vid card.
I got Catalyst 9.2 currently. ( or the programs, since we both had similar programs installed, including the diskeeper, vmware, ati drivers )

My sound card is built into my motherboard (ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe) but, could it really be the programs especially since we did have to remove them before we could install Windows 7?

I'm hoping this will tell us more: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

the advisor gives me an empty window saying "if your computer ran the beta, then it should run the RC"
my computer ran the beta but on a VMware side with no problem.

and man, I really dont want to eat the bullet and reinstall, I have a really huge ammount of programs, including very big games (the last remnant, steam games, programs like MsOffice & other school and graphic design ones.. )

I had a similar issue when I was trying to install 64 bit through a dvd. It was "expanding files" for like two hours and stuck at some percentage(didn't take not, but it was above 48%).

I ended up killing the install and putting it on a usb drive.

Gigabyte board(ud4p) and ATI card(surprise surprise HD 3870). i7 920

I was doing a fresh install though.

Interesting, i'm not sure if USB version would make much difference as it seems it's already copied everything over just gets stuck moving files around, hmmm...

And that advisor should hopefully be launched within the next few hours.

the first time I tried to install , it did hang after expanding files ( when gathering info ).
the second, in the same 62% I told earlier.

so thats 3 persons with a 3870 who gets the problems.

just wondering andy, by any chance you have a gigabyte board?
I might try USB install later as well.

ok, Update, tried installing with no USB devices connected, nor monitors ( no printer, scanner, usb tablet, etc )

so it has to be EITHER the 8 Gb of ram or the 3870 Catalyst drivers.

I wonder if Upgrading to the newest drivers would help. ( I usually stay with the most stable ones, I dont like to upgrade right away )

I will try later one last time, but with only half of my memory modules ( 4 GB ), no usb connectors and with the catalyst drivers removed.

Note: this time the installation did freeze again at 62%, but the file number where it hanged, was a bit higher than last time.

Copernicus : by any chance you have 8 GB of ram? (dont think so unless you dont have tri channel memory installed but just to be sure.)

So i mean, must it be the ATI Card? I mean, unless it finds issues with 4 GBs of RAM too? I mean, I don't understand how the graphics card would even affect it :s

well
someone here already reported it couldt be the 8 GB of ram.

the Ati in other card, could be some sort of driver incompatibility. what version of catalyst you're using Andy?

I remmeber the old 8.12 was targeted by some x64 users for not accepting anything over 4Gb of ram ( it would crash badly until the ram was removed ) others didnt report such a problem, so its hard to know.

I upgraded from DVD from Vista to 7000 and it took me about 2 hours. 7000 -> 7057 was about the same. That was from DVD.

But about that problem: Looks like there's a driver problem on your machine somewhere. Best bet is to just clean install Win7 now. All your stuff is stuck in a Windows.old folder, so you won't lose anything unless something wrong goes on, which it likely won't.

the problem is not just old data, but configuration and tweaks.
the other thing I could try as well is, try to roll back to vista's defaults, on all options ( like services, I usually shut down services I dont need )

or try a beta version of Vista ( I tried the version 7068 and seemed to work fine in my case, but never tried upgrade. )

Yeah, plus, i wont have enough room to use the transfer files and settings wizard. This is very bizzare and I still haven't come to a way to fix it. Is this the end of the line?

I actually wonder if I should try upgrading first to a beta like the 7070 or similars, then upgrade to the RC7100.

any expert can give their opinions?
