hey guys, i've been looking into upgrading my desktop and have been able to do so without issue so far. here's my thing, there are 2 memory banks which i have already filled with a 4gb stick of ram in each. 8gig of ram and the machine runs like a charm. however, next to the two memory banks are two sets of holes in the motherboard that look like spots for additional memory banks.

can i purchase and install 2 ram memory bank slots onto the motherboard into those blank spaces?

my motherboard is a M2N68-LA (Narra6). i've found a picture of it here: Motherboard Specifications, M2N68-LA (Narra6) HP Pavilion a4311f Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

i'd appreciate any help or websites to refer to.

thanks

That looks like a negative, my friend. If your motherboard looks like that picture the manufacturer never installed the 3rd and 4th RAM sockets to the board (HP:rolleyes:).

So unless you have experience with a soldering iron (and probably BIOS chip replacement?) you are SOOL (NO GO).

Welcome to the Forum Hiitsme

Your maximum limit on the amount of memory a motherboard can handle is "hard wired". That means the chipset and BIOS can't use anything over 4 gigs regardless of how you load the slots.

You can add another 1GB if you only have 3 now, but once you hit 4GB you have reached the limit for that PC.

Also not that if you are running a 32 bit version of Windows the OS will only be able to recognize approx. 3.5GB of RAM anyway. You'de just be throwing your money away for 1/2 a gig.

You can, providing you run 64 bit. As stated, 32 bit can only handle a bit over 3 gig.

Also need to make sure a new mobo fits the case.

hey man, try this website: Memory-Up.com

thats where i finally ended up finding my 2x 4gb ram sticks. my computer recognized all 8gb fine because its windows 7 64bit. definitely get a new motherboard though and run windows 7 64bit. then snag up all the memory you can from this website. they've pretty much got everything you can find.

Please help me to understand the conclusions of this thread.
I have the same wish: upgrade my ram replacing the existing 2x2Gb modules by 2x4Gb modules in my M2N68-LA (Narra6) motherboard:
Motherboard Specifications, M2N68-LA (Narra6) HP Pavilion Slimline s5300it Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

socrgy9 says: "i have already filled with a 4gb stick of ram in each. 8gig of ram and the machine runs like a charm" (that is, he already has done the work?)

HP (the motherboard is inside an HP pc) says it is not possible

TVeblen says "Your maximum limit on the amount of memory a motherboard can handle is "hard wired". That means the chipset and BIOS can't use anything over 4 gigs regardless of how you load the slots." (that is, it is not possible to upgrade to 8Gb ram)

afterthat, socrgy9 says: " i finally ended up finding my 2x 4gb ram sticks. my computer recognized all 8gb fine because its windows 7 64bit. definitely get a new motherboard though and run windows 7 64bit." (Sorry for my bad english, I do not understand: finally, he has already made the work or not? definitely get a new motherboard thoug, what does it mean?)

In case, could I buy "CORSAIR - Memory Dimm XMS3 8Gb (2x4Gb) ddr3 1333 MHz Unbuffered CL 9-9-9-24"?

IS or IS NOT possible to upgrade to 8Gb ram using 2x4Gb modules?

A ultimate help will e greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Save yourself time and aggravation. Buy a NEW PC.
The one you are trying to upgrade is OLD with a slower CPU then you can get today.

OK.
I've been through this a few times. In the end more RAM, new video card (If I could find one that was better then the one I had and worked in my system), did not do what I expected and I eventually, within weeks of doing the upgrades, built a new system.

I was just trying to save you the expense of buying new stuff for a OLD computer.

Hello Deebigi. Welcome to the Forum.

Although the OP and hiitsme0819 never made it clear, it is my impression, from what they did say to each other, that they both went ahead and bought new motherboards and then added additional RAM.

I can see where you may have gotten the impression that either was able to add RAM to their old machines, but I do not think that is what happened. Perhaps they will check back and confirm that for us.

new mobo

it is nto possible to upgrade ur ram beyond the manufacturer specs howevever check tigerdirect.com or newegg.com with a little effort its easy to find a new mobo that is completely compatible with the rest of your pc i started off going to just buy a new mobo but if you start looking around and have the ability to put everything together you can build your own pc for like half of what you would pay for an equal one in a store
