No power to motherboard

OS=Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
MB=Asus P5G41T-MLX Plus

I had been on the computer for a couple of hours & then logged off to do some chores.Came back 3 or 4 hours later & turned on the comp nothing happened.Thought it might be power supply so pulled it & installed an extra I had. Nothing.Reinstalled original.Thought maybe it was the front panel switch so disconnected the switch from the MB then shorted the power supply switch on the MB.Nothing.I was watching the CPU & case fan one time & when I hit the switch there was a very slight movement of the fans & there is no light comes on to show power to MB so now I'm down to guessing it is the MB or CPU.If it is the the CPU I can replace it if it is the MB when I replace it can I use my old HDD on the new MB so I don't loose every thing on it?
Thanks for any info/help.If I can't use the old HDD I'm a cooked goose.

Hello jessee.....yes, if the motherboard is dead, you can use your HDD. But, the OS will not will usable, as you will be installing a new motherboard with all new drivers. So, I will suggest that connect your hard disk to your friend's PC and transfer all the files that you need to a different partition and let the partition (mostly C drive) as it is with just your OS on it. When you will attach your HDD to your new board then you can just install new OS on the same partition i.e. C:

It's even scary when I have a nearly identical motherboard as you.

I also have the same OS, problem at the same time, and win7-x64.

In the short of my problem I was able to again get power after unplugging all my USB devices and then it came to life by itself without pressing the power button after I unplugged all the USB devices. I'm curious of the same will happen to you.

Mine also didn't appear to have power and tried all the same troubleshooting you did. Was curous if for some reason you're have the same issue as I.
