URGENT HELP NEEDED -possible bad hard drive (XP) and windows 7

Hey guys, need some quick help here.

I have a work laptop with a 2.5 HDD with XP installed on it. When I try to boot it up I get the BSOD with "unmountable boot disk" or something like that (0x000000ED)

Anyways before I send this in to our IT guy at work i want to try to get some important files off it.

I just picked up a USB 3.0 external drive enclosure (my home PC is windows 7 USB 3.0). I then connected my 2.5 work laptop drive to this enclosure then plugged into my win7 home machine.

Shouldnt I be able to read and pull some folders files off this drive onto my home machine for backup purposes?

Is there a program that I need to read from this drive (providing its not completely crapped out) because I have an OS on it XP that is? SOmething like some sort of drive explorer or something? Im in a huge panic, so it doesnt help that im not completely thinking straight either...

It my computer, my home machine is seeing the attached drive, but kind of hanging when I try to explore or open up the drive in question....

any quick thoughts or help is HUGELY appreciated.

When you restart your computer or upgrade to Windows XP, you receive the "STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error message

Open an command prompt.
In the command prompt, type chkdsk #: f/x/r/v and press Enter.

when do you get the bluescreen? are you able to boot with your windows cd and perform a chkdsk in recovery console? (basically getting windows to check your disc for errors)

chkdsk c: for example if your disk (hard drive is letered as a c drive) if it finds errors chkdsk /f to fix errors

If the drive is physically damaged, then no, the data is not retrievable.

You can try Unstoppable Copier, but if this fails, then most likely the HDD is damaged.
You can also try a Ubuntu Live CD, download Ubuntu and burn it to disk, boot from the CD and choose the right option to boot to it, not install it and try accessing it from there.

Other than that, a Data Recovery service might be able to get it, but can get very expensive and there are no guarantees.

Well, try the chkdsk, at this point it can't hurt, although I might try Ubuntu first because, Linux can handle a drive like this a little better than Windows can. Not completely sure why, but I have me theories. Anyway, if none of that works, then nothing will.

this may sound dumb, but can i run disk check (above) only on this bad drive while it is connected to my win7 machine?

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

The HD has Win XP installed from OP's Notebook, have a look at post 1.

dammit these 3 kids of mine (all under 3.5 years) they're driving me NUTS. Dont they know how important it is to be able to read from a disk in order to retrieve some stupid files...!!!...lol

Well, wait to have grand kids aswell.

You'll need to put the HD back in the laptop to run maker's HD diag/repair CD scan as they won't run on externals. But if the HD can be saved then that is your best shot as I have salvaged many HD's using that together with chkdsk.

As you might be having problems with command line, try running chkdsk by rightlicking the external>Properties>Tools>Error checking>tick both boxes.
