About my hyperthreading on my Dell Dimension 4600

I would like to defiantly enable my hyper threading on my Dell Dimension 4600. And I have a pentium 4 processor. I tried looking in my bios when I press my F2 key, it goes into my bios. But I can't seem to find the hyperthreading option. Is it under the CPU information menu? Because I cannot seem to find it at all! My bios screen is from Dell. It is like a grey color. I do not even have the Award bios or the Phoenix bios screen which is blue. But I wish I had that bios screen a lot. I wonder if there is anyway to download it and get it so I can get rid of my other old Dell bios. But I don't think that I can do that. Oh well. So I hit control, alt, delete and the Task Manager comes up. And then I click on the Performance tab. Now here the top box is wide open. And it is not separated by two boxes. But it would be like this if I could figure out on where my hyper threading options are in my bios. Also, I would like to know more about adding more cores instead of 2 to my Pentium 4. So let me know and explain to me on how to do this. I think I can do this by going into Run, and typing in Msconfig. Then I click number of processors or something like that. But I am not really that sure if that is right to me. Because there are many other ways to do this I believe. But I have seen before that some Task Managers have about 8 cpu graphs, and some even have about 16 graphs. Man, that is really cool. I wonder if mine can handle that. Probably not. But maybe up to 2 or even 8 Cpu graphs will show up on my computer. So I would like to know much more about this info. All righty? Now the other thing that I want to know is about the Physical Address Extension and how to enable that. But I think it is only works on 32-bt operating systems. Not on 64-bit systems. But it might work on 64-bit systems. I am not sure about that. So let me know about that please. So this way, I can add more ram to my 512 megabytes. I really want to try out this Physical Address Extension trick and see if my computer can do it. Well anyway, just let me know on how to enable my hyperthreading in my 4600. And also let me know more about the PAE which is the Physical Address Extension trick. But mostly, I would like to know about enabling my hyperthreding and showing more then 2 Cpu graphs in my Task Manager. I just think that I have to download a plugin or a driver to make my hyperthreading option appear in my bios, but I don't have any clue on how to do it. Because I know my computer can do it. I have an 8300 which is the 4600's big brother.

You are asking way too much of a quite old computer. You can get the 4600 to multithread, but that is about it.

You have a dell, and you can only (i believe) run a dell BIOS. You cant add more cores unless you replace the motherboard and even then it isnt worth it.

I am not sure if the Dell can be forced to run PAE but that only comes into play to enable the computer to access more than 4 gigs of ram not add ram/

I had a Dell 4600 before I got this PC. I put in a 3.4GHz Pentium 4, which had hyperthreading. I think I can remember, or find out how I managed it. But 1st, what CPU do you have? Does it support HT? You won't get more than 2 CPU graphs, as it is a single core CPU, and the 2nd would be the HT virtual core. And unless you have changed the CPU as I did, then you don't have a HT CPU, and can't do it anyway, sorry.

Again, I need to know what Pentium 4 you have. Mine came with a 2.8GHz P4 and it had NO HT. Only after upgrading my PC myself did I get a HT capable CPU. If I can determine you have a HT capable IC, I can walk you through some things. If you don't have a HT capable CPU, all else is wasted time.

And I have about 512 megabytes of ram. So that is it. So I just hope that my processor supports hyperthreading, that's all I can say. I probably need to upgrade to like Vista or Windows 7. Oh and by the way, is multithreading better than hyperthreading? If I cannot seem to hyperthread, can I multithread instead? Well anyway, just explain to me a little bit more about multithreading. I mean I do not seem why that my processor can't support it. Because I bet it can support it very well. So let me know what happens with this. So thank you very much.

No, your CPU doesn't support HT, sorry. No big deal really, at the specs your PC has, you'd rarely if ever notice any difference. For your next PC, you can build a killer setup

I think that you are mistaken because I look up 2.80 Gigahertz on a Pentium 4 processor in a search and it says that a Pentium 4 2.80 has hyperthreading for it. So I really think that you are wrong about this. But I just do not know why that I can't seem to find the hyper-threading option in my bios under the Cpu information. So please help me out on this because I really want to see at least 2 or more Cpu graphs in my Task Manager. I mean when you told me that there wasn't any hypertheading on my Pentium 4 2.80 Ghz processor I felt upset and really mad. Also, I would like to know if there is a way to download a processor driver that will change my awful Pentium 4 to a Core 2 Duo or anything that is dual-core. Because single core is not good enough for me at all. Because I cannot play any Playstation 2 games at all on Pcsx2, which is a really good Playstation 2 emulator. The recommended requirements are needed for Pcsx2 would be a Core 2 Duo because this would really make the games work at a good decent speed. But when I start to play a game on my computer which is Pentium 4, it is no good at all. The emulator just starts crashing on me and it really stinks. So what I am saying to you is that I would like to know where I can download this processor driver to make my computer run much faster so that I can play Playstation 2 games without crashing because this gets very annoying. I mean there has got to be some kind of way to download the Core 2 Duo processor driver maybe on the Intel website or some other site. And the worse part is that I tried to upgrade to a 64-bit of my Windows XP but it wouldn't take it. So I think that my computer is just no good to me anymore. I really don't know on what to do now. So please if you can, cheer me up and help me out on this major problem that I am having about the hyperthreading issue. Because I am telling you the truth right there. It said that a Pentium 4 2.80 Gigahertz has hyperthreading support. So I do not have any idea why I can't enable it in my bios settings! It just won't show up there. Well anyway, please let me know on how to solve this problem so that my hyperthreading option shows up in my bios. Because I know I have it, that's for sure. The Pentium 4 processor is not x64 compatible, nor is there ANY way to make it "become" a different processor.

At this point, it sounds like you would be much better off buying a new computer.

Yes, there were 2.8GHz Pentium 4 CPU's that have HT, but not the one you have, if it is the one that came with your PC.

I installed a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 that did have HT, and belive me here, there was no discernible difference in anything I could see or feel after I managed to activate HT on my PC. The only difference was 2 CPU graphs in task manager.

There is an option in your BIOS to turn on HT, but you can't do it unless you make the change from a ACPI Uniprocessor to Multiprocessor. But that won't make your CPU into a HT CPU if it doesn't support it. Tell you what, on the front of your tower, there is an Intel Inside sticker, post back exactly what it says, every word, letter for letter. A Guy

There is a very easy way to know if you have HyperThreading for that P4... just open Task Mannager and see the "Performance" tab, if you see "2" cores in the CPU history, you have HyperThreading... if not, you have the old P4 build (older than Prescott)... and sadly, that models don't support HT...

Anyway, download and run this:
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Post all the info that program gives to you, depending on the Codename, I can tell you if your CPU can support HT or not...

I agree with this... HT, even in the new i7 chips is worthless, you will never get any performance gain with that, I worked with some Prescott P4 HT 3.0 Ghz... and many games ran slower... even a Pentium D processor is better... HT does no difference...

If you have a bit of $$$ and would like an upgrade... go for a new rig instead (I mean, processor, MoBo...) If not... don't worry, you are not loosing anything.

The Dell 4600 Motherboard has a BIOS that will recognize a HT processor and show it in the BIOS as such. If you don't have HT you will not see it in the BIOS. If you do, it will give you the option of turning it on or not.
Something new I just learned is that there are two different types of 4600 motherboards. The early ones will only support up to a P4 3.0GHz and the later ones will support a P4 3.4GHz. If you plug a 3.4 into an early 4600 it will tell you it is not supported but will still run at a severely reduced clock speed.
Lately I'm finding out WAY more than I ever wanted to about 4600 Motherboards!

The "newer" ones like the Prescott core are, older ones aren't.


There's so many Pentium 4s, it's confusing, like there's two different version of the Prescott version, some have hyper-threading, some don't.
